There's probably already a billion posts like this but I want to say it anyway. My therapist is terrible. Why the hell is it this expensive? He treats me like a five year old (today we named our feelings…) and sounds like a motivational YouTuber on repeat. I honestly struggled with keeping a straight face as he went on about his metaphorical garbage. He literally talks more about himself than me. I don't think he understands what depression is or that I have it despite the fact I'm there from the hospital because I had active suicidal ideation. He hasn't ever asked me about my symptoms or even considered the possibility that I could be clinically depressed. He seems like a nice person but he hasn't helped at all. I can't believe I need to sit through these sessions.

That's rough, getting a bad therapist or someone who doesn't fit you can easily do more harm than good. Is there any way you could switch to someone else? Or maybe communicate that what he's doing isn't helpful?

That therapist sounds so useless. I can imagine that it must be so frustrating having to deal with someone like that. I'm sorry that you are going through this.

My ex therapist did not know the difference between bipolar 1 and 2 and which one she was treating me for after years lol. Utterly useless.

Is yours an actual therapist or one of those LCSW/LMSW that got a degree in social work and therefore know next to nothing about psychology and are more like life coaches?

It must be so frustrating and disappointing. So don't feel bad about contributing to a large body of anecdotal evidence about therapists being garbage. Just make sure not to go back if you ever feel like you've been insulted, patronized or undermined in any way. You might want to desperately look for other explanations because it's hard to come to terms with the fact that an entire section of society that is supposed to be helpful is in fact mostly just a bunch of opportunists enjoying an easy life at the expense of vulnerable people. Unfortunately, that is the reality of the situation. At the first whiff of something off, do yourself a favour and get out of there permanently.

I've long ago come to the conclusion that there is no professional for pay model of therapy that can ever be useful to anyone...except for abusive parasites who become therapists. I suppose some people benefit from medical care that includes attention to emotional problems (basically getting access to pills) and perhaps some young people who don't actually have serious problems might get a slight benefit from talking to an adult who's read the scripts that can be offered to young people with minor problems who can't talk to their parents, older relatives or wiser friends. Aside from that I think therapy is more often than not going to leave someone like me worse off and while I can only speculate, I don't think my experiences are uncommon or even in the minority.

He has a PhD in pyscology and actually seems very experienced. I am honestly really confused how he has managed to not address any of the really obvious issues I mentioned in my original post.

Yeah I'm beginning to reach that conclusion. I felt pretty optimistic about therapy but so far the internet has been a much better resource and that speaks volumes. Maybe there is a better therapist for me that I just need to find I'm not sure.

I'm not sure if I can switch but if it keeps going on like this I will. At the start of the first session I tried to make it clear to him that after being depressed for multiple years and having access to the internet he didn't need to talk down to be but I guess I need to reiterate that.

Whether it's a social worker, psychologist, or medical doctor, they'll all be of little use and have a high potential for leaving you worse off after long periods of "therapy" that were little more than thinly veiled insults and condescension.

Damn that's terrible and I'm sorry to hear that. I'd say your plan to reiterate that you don't need to be talked down to like that makes sense, but if he doesn't correct within another session or two, drop him. Why waste time and money on someone who doesn't hear you at the most basic level?

And if you do want to continue with therapy, I hope you do find what you're looking for.

I honestly have no idea why therapy costs chat it does. To me it feels like youre just paying someone to care about you. Although I know that it does help some people, so it might be worth it to try another therapist if you can.
