Hi guys, I know it's been a while. My mom died exactly a month ago today. Needless to say, I'm not doing well. We found empty bottles of extra strength Benadryl under her bed while cleaning out her apartment a couple weeks ago. We weren't sure how she died at first (she did have a suicide attempt by morphine about a year ago, but all of her prescription opiates were taken away shortly afterwards), but now we think she died by benadryl overdose. By the looks of it she ingested at least 6,000 mg. How likely is it to die from Benadryl overdose? She did have multiple health conditions. Do you think she suffered? She appeared peaceful when she was found, she appeared to just be in a deep sleep until she was touched. There was no vomit or any signs of distress, but still, I can only imagine how hellish that amount of benadryl would be. I'm so worried that she suffered. This is the first time I've dealt with death personally, and I was just fixing my relationship with my mother. I've been EXTREMELY suicidal, but now I understand how it feels to be on the other side of it. God, this hurts.

It doesn't matter if she suffered or not; once you go to the other side all of that is released and doesn't follow you. She found peace.

I think her body being in good condition makes it seem more likely that she did not suffer. I searched and it is very difficult but not impossible to overdose on benadryl. I am very sorry for your loss.

My heart aches for you, at least your mum is finally free from the pain and suffering of this existence. If you ever need anyone to talk to, feel free to message me.

I am so, so terribly sorry for your loss. It sounds like she was suffering a lot and just needed a release from that. I truly hope she found peace.

In a sense, I can relate to what you are going through. My mom died 5 and a half years ago and she died a very sliq and painful death from sepsis. At one point, we had to make the decision to extend her life by a year or two or not. Catch was her quality of life would be very poor so, as per her wishes, we decided to forgo those procedures. After that, it was just slowly watching her slip further into the coma. I miss her every day still and want to go be with her again. I need to feel safe and secure again...

6000 mg is too much for the body if we're talking benadryl. I've consumed 1,400 mg (divided into two days) and got extremely catatonic.

I will be very honest with you. Your mum was in pain (not extreme) for the first few minutes, her back would've ached. But afterwards... Death, if anything, is peace beyond measure.

Of course now she is at peace and is free from this horrible life, but I understand it is painful to lose people. I can imagine this must be awful to have to go through, I wish you the best.

It is very painful when a loved one leaves from whom you received the most joy in this difficult life. I understand your pain and sincerely sympathize. And as a faulty optimist, I believe that she left peacefully and found her peace.

Yeah, hoping the few family I have will go on fine without me .... they should be good, but not sure how long it may hurt.

I guess OP just needs an answer to cope with the fact her mom is gone. I'd wonder myself crazy too.
