Well, they don't get to experience the completely badass cold-heartedness that comes from constant deprivation and pain. Neither do they get to cry for several hours every day, which is scientifically shown to release feel-good hormones or sum.

I can 100% relate. My housemate and only person who truly advocates for me has just started dating a guy and I am finding it so hard to adjust. I have such mixed emotions over the entire thing that it isnt helping me at all but I refuse to let her know and instead am as supportive as possible as she has been amazing to me and I dont like being the selfish person.
