My top three would probably be:

Runaway Train (1985) - a convict escapes his life term in prison to end up on a runaway train
Pointbreak (1991) - everybody knows it. surfer's saga of love and death.
Leaving Las Vegas (1995) - Nicholas Cage drinks himself to death in Vegas.
