Today is the one year Anniversary of Mizore passing away
IMG 8491
Mizore was about 3 when he was transferred to a different aquarium for a breeding program which people considered strange since ringed seals aren't at sexual maturity until they're 7. While he was at the other aquarium, people noted that his enclosure was much smaller, had little to no enrichment, had no other seals, and also had barely any human interaction. These are the conditions he passed away in. Alone. Scared. Far away from his home where he was loved and appreciated.
IMG 7839
He was a very difficult pregnancy. He was rejected by his mother. So the staff at his original aquarium took care of him. As a result he was very people socialized. Many noted at he loved hugging people. When workers would go into his enclosure he'd always hug their leg or just in general.
IMG 8493
He was full of love, yet he died alone and scared.
IMG 7838
I wish there could be justice for Mizore. A beautiful little ringed seal who was so full of life and potential if it wasn't for greedy and selfish humans.

Maybe that's why I'm posting a thread instead of just making another profile post. He deserves his own recognition away from my personal posts about whatever is ailing my life.

Rest in Piece little Mizore, I hope you're in a big enclosure that stretches for miles. With a big ice shelf just like the one in your previous home. Where you can play as much as you want with other seals and with as many staff members as you can hug

Fly high, little Mizore 🕊️💜🦭

Poor thing. I feel a similar swell of pity for Tilikum- the orca at Sea World that the documantary 'Blackfish' revolved around. He actually killed 3 people but as many people argued- he was pushed to do it. Such cruel conditions for such large and intelligent animals.

I read that people make 'seal cushions' out of wet suits for abandoned seal pups to snuggle up to. They are adorable creatures. We used to visit a sea life centre that had sea lions. They had laminated pictures of fish etc. When you held them up to the glass and moved them around, they played chase with them. They had so much energy and were so fast. They had no trouble keeping up, no matter how fast you moved the images around.

It would be nice to think that all the animals that suffer here are free somewhere else.

If backed into a corner, animals have no other choice but to fight, it's no wonder Tilikum did the same thing

And yea! Wet suit mamas! They make me sad because seals want their mama so bad they'll use a wet suit as their mama, they just want that comfort

And playing with the seal lions sounds so much fun! I've only ever been on one zoo that had a harbor seal but it was just one in there with a seal lion. Not the greatest conditions but it was cool to see a seal like that! I even got a seal plush there, but I gave it to my ex even tho it had been my birthday because I love her and I wanted her to have it.

I truly hope all the animals that pass can all be happy with each other, just playing and getting all the love and cuddles they deserve for eternity 💜🦭

Oh, sweet, chubby, cute little guy.May he rest in peace. It's funny how orcas have known to never kill anyone in the wild, but they've killed humans in captivity. It just shows how wrong it is to keep these animals in an enclosure for our amusement.

Also, no great white shark has ever survived captivity. Not even in a very large enclosure. They will always die. I guess all the animals are suffering. It's just wrong to capture them and take them away from the enrichment in the wild.

I don't think it's any different for the lions, tigers, other animals and aquatic species as well.

I just want to correct a misunderstanding (absolutely no disrespect meant to you, you seem to care for animals and that is wonderful): animals can live and thrive in captivity, like in accredited, non-profit zoos (such as San Diego Zoo). There are even plans for some animals to be re-released back in to the wild. They are very important for conservation of endangered species and giving safe places for injured animals, who legally cannot be re-released.

Places like Otaru Aquarium (where Mizore was transferred, but please correct me if I am wrong!) and roadside zoos are notable because they are exceptions, not the status quo.

Well, actually I agree with that. I was talking exclusively about certain Zoos that don't care about them but maybe I should have been clearer. I watched this video a few months ago and I was very impressed. Just check out the hyperbaric chamber for elephants and see how much they alleviate the suffering of all these poor animals. It's phenomenal. The amount of thought that went into each aspect of this sanctuary is mind boggling.Truly a paradise for animals that have been used as beasts of burden, abused and suffered throughout their lives. There's a second part on YouTube as well.

Yes! He was transferred to Otaru Aquarium, which already had a reputation for being shitty for very real reasons!!
It just shows how wrong it is to keep these animals in an enclosure for our amusement.
(I did see your follow-up on this but I still wanted to use this to talk about Tokkari!)

Tokkari center is very good with seals! Tokkari has both inside and outside enclosures! They also have plenty of enrichment, along with keeping their enclosures managed and also doing their best to cater to their seals needs and wants(there used to be a seal called Ponsuke who only liked fish with their heads cut off so they only fed him headless fish!)

(Ponsuke doing the face that's the most popular online 🕊️)

They also take in rescues! Yochan(jumpa jumpa Queen and mother to my favorite seal Tsuki) and Mashiro(newest seal in Tokkari) are both rescued!
