Does anyone know if a 20 mg stat dose of meto is effective for keeping the sn down? Rather not take it for an extended time due to serious adverse effects

Although a stat dose of 30 mg is recommended, I think you should be fine with 20 mg. Anti emetics are not 100% necessary for this method, however it will slim your chances of failing significantly. If you make sure that you take it atleast 1 hour prior to SN (To give the meto enough time to fully work), it will work.
If you experience too many side effects with meto you can use domperidone as an alternative. It is not as strong as meto but has less side effects.

Thanks! I actually took domperidone before for something unrelated and had a bit of a reaction because the pharmacy never told me about interactions. Pharmacists aren't created equal!
