No. They can't force you to take psych meds. An adult has the right to refuse any medical treatment they don't want including medication. In order to force you to take medication against your will, the doctor would have to go to court and convince a judge at a hearing that you are incompetent and also that based on your medical condition taking the medication would be necessary to treat you and in your best interest.

If they forced you to take medication and you were harmed as a result, the doctor would lose his licence, and you could sue him.

You are pretty much forced to. They basically won't let you out until you take the medications.

I don't fully know about the US, but in Europe they can force you if they think you are psychotic and a danger for yourself or others.

Hey there, I've been in a mental hospital about 4 times now. I have a steady job and none of them checked to see if I went into one or not. HIPAA protects that part, if you were getting a security clearance, then that would be a different story and they may ask more questions. Mental hospitals don't require you to be on medication or take any medications, but if you become unruly or a hazard to yourself and others, they'll tackle you, put you in a restraint chair, and inject you with a sedative. Some hospitals are public and some are private. The private ones tend to be a bit better treatment wise and have many activities, they also lessen the amount of violence that goes on and will intervene if another patient attacks you. In a public mental hospital, staff are not allowed to intervene if a patient attacks you. You are on your own to defend yourself against the attacker.

In the country I am from admissions into mental health institutions do come up during background checks. I do not know the policies of the country this person is from, I can only talk about my country's policies.

Their first question was about the US, so I assumed their second one also pertained to the US. Hospitalizations, or any kind of medical records, definitely do NOT come up in background checks. That's one of the many reasons HIPAA exists.

I suppose if one is hospitalized because of an injury during the commission of a felony, that may be different.

But if a person is hospitalized for any reason, mental or physical, it definitely will NOT show up on a background check.
