This was rather common in medieval time executions before the calculation charts for rope length/subject weight became common. It's interesting how the force required to break the neck and spinal cord is not that much less than what it takes to actually severe the head.

I read an article back in the day on ogrish I think it was of a man that tied, if I remember correctly, a steel wire around a tree, the other end through the trunk of his car to the drivers seat and around the neck. He then proceeded to accelerate, violently one would assume.
The result was similar.
