What's the safest way to practice this method without accidentally passing out and maybe dieing. I want to get as close to the edge as I can without the actual dieing part yet.....

You simply can't guarantee your safety if you really want to get "as close to the edge" and you shouldn't try doing such a thing without being prepared for the consequences!
