I have applied my ass off recently and have recently felt demotivated by it all, around 50 applications, not one singular call back... until today! I received an email that a company I applied to (part time QA Tester Internship, relevant to my CS major). It's aerospace, which is sort of a dream industry for me to work in. I've always wanted NASA but would settle for any Aerospace company, and while this is more consulting, I'm still happy!

I'm nervous and I do have absolutely ZERO experience QA Testing, so I don't think I'll get it but I miss 100% of the shots I don't take, so I plan on doing this interview and seeing where it goes. I also will say, I hate the idea of having less free time tbh, I don't know the hour requirements and I already spend quite a bit of time in class and doing assignments, and I really enjoy my downtime, and I hate the idea of giving that away. I am trying to swallow that mighty pill of what I lose, because it pays quite well for my area. Not super great, but $1/hr more than most fast food places around me, BUT it's way more relevant to my major and might benefit, especially if they offer me a full-time job after college, which judging from their LinkedIn isn't unlikely if I get an offer. Again, I doubt I'll get it but I wanted to share because I felt like I was drowning at 50 applications, not one callback. This has reinvigorated home in me. It helps that it's also in my town I'm living in now, which means I don't have to temporarily move during the summer.

Anyways, thanks for allowing me to share and reading if you read all that!

That's awesome! You're right, you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. They want to talk to you or they wouldn't have asked for an interview, remember that.

They scheduled the interview, now all I gotta do is prep before the day comes. It's this week, and I feel a lot of pressure between this and upcoming midterms. I'm probably not going to practice too much, but I want to be knowledgeable about their company. I know the year they were founded, the fact that they have SBIR contracts, good relations with the department of defense and branches of the military, who I'll be interviewing with (no one technical, from my understanding. The president of the company though, which is quite intimidating, possibly more so than someone technical), and a bit more. Not some crazy update, but I'm both glad and scared.

I know, in the back of my mind, this is good no matter the outcome. It means my resume is okay, and worst case scenario, I don't get the job but now I have experience interviewing for a more technical role than fast food or labor (all of my previous jobs). Best case, I get the job and possibly open some doors in the future, maybe even have a full time position lined up after college. It's still hard to shake that fear that if I don't get the job, everything is ruined, even if that isn't true and I know it isn't.

How did it go?

I'm in a similar predicament on probation at a new job. But after being jobless for months I have very low confidence in my ability to make it. I'm battling hard to beat my depressive lethargy.

I honestly have no clue if it went well or not tbh. They were very neutral throughout the whole thing, which made them hard to read. They did say that they would get back to me eventually with a decision, but didn't really give me a window. I'm not super hopeful that I did well enough to get it, but the interview had some fairly technical questions, which I suppose is to be expected. I feel as though I prepped really well though. Practiced an elevator pitch for the inevitable, "Tell me about yourself," and delivered that with confidence. I also had some notes on the company just off screen, as well as a list of questions which I asked at the end of the interview. A big thing that helped is I had my resume on the side so I can adequately explain whatever's on there.

Anyways, I plan on following up if I haven't heard back by mid-next week, which will be one week after my interview, which I feel is an acceptable waiting period considering they never gave me a window.

I wish you the best in your new job! Just try to remember, they chose you for a reason.

They picked me for my stellar past, which I can only dream of distantly now. How was I ever that person? They got no clue I'm so unfit. 😢

Godspeed. I think any prolonged break from work rewires the brain somehow. If we can force ourselves to relearn to 'work hard' we should be okay. I have failed at a couple of previous retries so really crossing my fingers. (Very heavy sigh)

I also wish you the best. Who knows, you may even do well and end up surprising yourself. I am a strong proponent of the idea that anything is possible. I might not be accepted after the interview, but I'm still trying my absolute hardest to believe that there's a chance I will.

Yes, great timing! If they give you a "don't know" answer, ask them for an ETA on when you'll get an answer. It's always better to have a time frame for answers, so you're not just left in limbo. If they don't comply with their timeframe, then you know it's best to move on and look elsewhere.

They gave me some hard tasks they had set aside in an ongoing project that I have a few days to catch up and tackle. God help me.

A Not-So-Great update for those who were interested. I had already assumed this outcome since it's been a minute since my interview, but I was rejected. They said they went with a different candidate who they feel was best suited for the position.

I'm sulking in my sorrows for a bit.

Sorry to hear it didn't work out, but I hope you can be graceful with yourself. This industry is exceptionally brutal right now. As you said before, the fact that you landed the interview in the first place is evidence that you're doing something right. Keep playing the numbers game and I'm sure something will eventually come your way. 🫂

Just throwing this out there: don't be afraid to change job plans. Daughter was getting nowhere with jobs in her major, no experience and all that. Made the leap and went to tech school and just finished cdl class. She gets to pick a job now instead of scrounging. It wasn't her ideal first job goal but it pays well and is in demand. She had older students in there as well, people making a change. Just an idea if things don't pan out.

I was laid off in June 2020, thank you Covid! and I had lots and lots of interviews and I landed on my feet. It took a year and a half, but I kept plowing forward and interviewing. I had over 42 years of experience and that actually was a hindrance, as companies thought that I would want a sky-high salary, nope I just wanted to work, have a job and keep myself occupied, as work keeps my mind off of my 24/7 chronic pain.

You are a VERY intelligent, and kind soul, and this is always a winning combo, may not be in a flash but it WILL be there for you.

You ARE a fantastic person, and it will happen, 100% believe in you always.

I plan on trying to learn at least one new thing over the summer. I just don't know what to pursue. I really wanna try my hand at web dev technologies.

I'm definitely not closing off any options, especially if after graduation, I can't get anything. I've even considered other options just in case. I think I would pursue a free CNA class and see if nursing interests me, or maybe trying out Teaching (my state has programs to help non-licensed bachelors degree holders pursue that field). Worst case, I could genuinely see myself working at a bank, it seems like something I could enjoy.

Either way, I don't want to consider those until I am certain the degree and job search isn't going well. Hopefully the CDL works out for your daughter though!!

Ugh Covid was the worst for layoffs. Ironically, it was a great time for tech hiring, but a bad time all around. I've always heard Age and lots of experience hurts yourself, and downplaying your resume can help. I'm glad you did eventually find work though.

Thank you for your kind words and advice, Walter, it's always appreciated! :)
