It's "Subforum", Not "Section".

I have seen a lot of users call these things a "Section".

It's not a Section, it's a Subforum.

This thread is in the "Offtopic Subforum". This thread is not in the "Offtopic Section".

This is the dictionary definition of "Subforum".

subforum (plural subforums)

1. (Internet) A single message board that is part of an online discussion forum.

This is the dictionary definition of "Section".

selection (countable and uncountable, plural selections)

1. The process or act of selecting.

If you haven't noticed, all Subforums here fit the "Subforum" definition much better than the "Section" definition.

Sub tv, subbari, subi. Finnish has many names for sub forums. We could call it subi, but I agree with you that sub forum is the best name.

Many words have more than one meaning. Another definition of section follows: "any of the more or less distinct parts into which something is or may be divided or from which it is made up".

So anything that is a subforum also meets the definition of a section.
