So im visiting my brother and some family and my brother was trying to strip speaker wires. I offered my pocket knife to him and immediately I was hit with a question from my uncle "why do you have a pocket knife?" I told him for protection, yhe truth. My brother then speaks out my uncles implications of me not needing to own a pocket knife because i cut myself and my response was "that's what a razor blade is for." Things got quiet real quick after that.

Like come on! Im a fucking adult human being, not some child running with a knife in my hand or some other fragile creature. I should be able to own a pocket knife no matter what I use it for. I own a zippo lighter and I dont fucking smoke cigarettes or drugs.

Also why is it anyone business that I cut myself? Am I cutting you? Am I using your tools or money for tools? Am I risking your body for infection? I'm in risking your body of hitting an artery? (Not that I go that deep anyway) like just fuck off and let me be. Im not physically hurting you or anyone else.

Self harm is often an attempt to gain a feeling of control to push back against anxieties. Something that can also provide a feeling of control is to craft humorous replies to questions you might get. Even after the fact it can be fun to imagine a response that would have been even more alarming.

Question: Why do you carry a knife?

Possible answers;

1. I plan to see how many ways there are to skin a cat.
2. Most butter knives are horrible, so I use my own.
3. In my spare time I go to airports and act like a terrorist for fun.
4. I hang around with artists who may wish to lose an ear.
5. I have heard you can stab a midget for good luck.
6. Don't provoke me. My parole officer said if I kill even one more person, I could be in real trouble.
7. I have found that a flat tire can teach people not to park too close.

though it might sound unnatural I feel like most people would act the same as they did with you.

true they overreacted once they saw you had a pocket knife but if you had past experiences with being depressed and doing self harm.
it's often the case that families that well. "care" will overreact and try to get the knife away from you.
that's also the reason that they brought the cutting as a whole. they are worried. or so I think.

I do believe they are pushing this slightly especially since they talked to you about the pocket knife in such a... attitude I suppose.
but if I had to guess it's cause they're merely just worried about you is all. and frankly if someone dear of mine also had past experiences with this and I find a sharp thing with them. I'd freak out too :<
