I am surprised by how few people on this site intend to use a gun as their method

I assume a pretty large percentage of users of this site are from the US where half of all suicides are by gun but maybe I am incorrect in this assumption. It seems like SN is the go to method. Does anyone else plan to use a gun when the time comes or is it just me?

I can't speak for everyone else, but I own a gun and that would be my last option. Very violent way to go out, and usually the worst possible outcome if you fail.

I also think the fact that roughly 50% of suicides in the US are by gun is more likely indicative that 48% of suicides in the US are unplanned and reactionary.

Most of us here (I suspect) have had long term issues (mental illness, etc…) that have made our journey here more of a slow burn than an explosion, so there's been an element of ideation that favors planning.

Very much this for me. It would leave a terrible mess, but also the consequences of failure are so extremely horrific that it forces me to look elsewhere.

I think about 40% of the site traffic is from the US. Although I may be wrong about that.

If I lived in the US, i'd spend my spare time becoming a hobbyist shooter and gun collector, getting super confortable with guns and how to use them. Then once I am an expert, I'll shoot my own head with skill and precision.

I'm sorry if I come across as rude but... Assuming that the majority of site users are from America is something that only Americans assume. You see it all the time on Reddit on subs that are specifically NOT for American stuff, like /r/worldnews. But if you point that out then you tend to get told made up hearsay statistics that change every time as to what the percentage of web traffic is.

I'm assuming that because this site has a lot more research, users would prefer a non violent means that is over quickly and peacefully. Or for their bodies to be found intact. Suicide by gun isn't guaranteed, even if you go for a headshot.

I think gun would be a more popular choice for impulsive users. But since this is a forum that requires time to set up and chat in, most users here can afford to wait a few weeks or months for a gentler method.

Shooting myself has always seemed quite messy and violent compared to poisoning, although I guess it has the benefit of being instant if you do it right. If SN or N were no longer available, it would probably be the next option I would go for given that I live in the US.

No need to apologize. I didn't say I thought the majority were American but rather that a significant percentage were. The only reason I assumed this was because everyone here seems fluent in English and a significant percentage of people in the world who are fluent live in the US.

I feel the opposite. Every single method eventually leads to brain hypoxia. If you survive this can cause you to have an anoxic brain injury, leaving you disabled or in a vegetative state. Gunshot to the head is the most reliable method out there, albeit not 100%.

I have always thought a gun was the best method but I spent years trying to suppress my suicidal thoughts so I purposely did not keep a gun in the home because I knew I would use it on myself. Now I'm broke and disabled and getting a gun would not be easy for me. If I can get my hands on one that will be my method. It's not like I can ask someone to help me get one because I don't want to put that guilt on anyone.

I'm in the US in a very gun friendly state so I could get one. Problem is I'm too fucked up in the head, I'd probably end up pulling a gun on someone, maybe shooting them and going to prison.

I don't want to end up in prison and not have the ability to take my own life with my preferred method.

Plus if I were to try to take my life with a gun, almost a guarantee I would fail because I fail at most everything I do. I would get real drunk and aim the gun at the wrong angle or something and end up living my final years in a hospital in a vegetative state

I have multiple guns in the house, but they are all handguns and rifles. The best gun for killing yourself is actually a shotgun, which I don't have, but wouldn't use even if I did have. It feels too violent and messy -- I really don't want to leave that sight for my husband and children.

I think that most suicides that happen via handguns are possibly the more 'impulsive' suicides. It is also a method that is more often chosen by a man, probably because I think they care a bit less about the "messy" factor.

The only way I'd ever use a gun is if I had a deep body of water to fall into with no people around so that if the gun shot didn't do it the drowning would. Otherwise too risky.

Its a good hobby, but an expensive one. Guns and ammo are (for the most part) super expensive, now more than ever. I've only gone once but shooting is a lot of fun if you respect the guns and are carful about safety and everything. Anyway that doesn't really matter to my point, but I felt like saying it anyway. Anyway anyway you don't need skill or precision to blow your brains across the wall. Its so popular among American suicides for a reason. Assuming you have a gun and bullet that's at least only partially trash and not completely trash, you just point the dangerous end at our head and pull the trigger.

I tried to get SN but they wouldn't deliver it to my house so I bought an AR-15 I did my research so I know exactly where to aim and I cock the gun and put it in my mouth then pull the trigger so I can build up the confidence to pull the trigger without thinking or freezing up and yes it's working. I planned on doing it on this day 2 weeks ago but 1 of my favorite artists is dropping an album this Friday, so I'm sticking around until further notice lol

Compared to other methods I think firearms give you the highest amount of control over whether it fails or not. If you do your research, choose a powerful enough weapon and ammunition, and practice where to aim you are as close to a guaranteed instant death as you can get. I also don't view it as a violent method if done right since you cease to exist before you can even perceive the shot was fired. As far as traumatizing the person that finds your body, I think any method is going to be scarring especially if your body begins to decompose over a few days. Also if you do it far enough out in nature there's chance your body will never be found or be mostly eaten by animals by the time anyone finds it.

I own 2 guns, one loaded in my nightstand. Why it has come across my mind a few times in the last few years, i quickly put the thought to rest.
First, I'm female and dont want to f*ck up my face
Second, I wouldnt want to find me dead with my brains blown out. I also cant stand the thought of my dogs freaking out and then probably having a meal, gross
Third, my family would gave to clean up the mess or pay someone to do it.
Finally, it just isnt an option for me...N is my choice but I've got just under a year before I can ctb after my life ins suicide clause and contestibility period ends
