I was born with strabismus(eye turn) and i had surgery at 4 years old in the Netherlands it did not go well which is common with this type of surgery and they wanted to do another surgery a month later but my parents just decided to move countries before they could do it which is so annoying and i hate them for that since this condition is a massive reason why im on this forum and want to end it (also because of abuse)

Throughout my whole life ive been bullied really bad especially in secondary school by older kids, people my age ,teachers, and students from other schools. Everyone avoided me because i was a 'wierdo' because of how i looked i was getting hit everyday after school most of the time and teachers noticed and didnt care and said it was my fault because the students were telling everyone rumours about me saying i was hacking everyones accounts at 11 years old like what💀

People recorded me getting jumped and sent it around and while im minding my buisness in lessons and i was a VERY quiet shy kid and there would be students going to my classroom shouting insults and laughing at me and the whole class joined in aswell as the teachers because they didnt think the condition affected me when it did i never used to cry at school but only at home where i also self harmed and when i was about 8-12 years old i believed in god so every night i cried while begging him to not let me wake up in the morning

I never had any friends because everyone avoided me because of how i looked and i just hid in the bathrooms at lunch and break and teachers used to insult me too infront of everyone i remember one time i was looking at myself in a pocket mirror and he said something like idk how yu can look at urself if you look like that. something like that and teachers laughing about my condition was really common because its not a condition that people take seriously and i think a big part of that is because of how movies and films portray people with strabismus as people that are stupid and dumb and i forgot to mention but the bullying and hitting was multiple times a day

And obviously because of all this bullying i never did any eye contact, i never go outside ,i always look down ,i dont talk to people etc because of how embarrassing it is i get insulted everywhere i go even by strangers laughing at me and if i do have to speak to someone i shake SO bad and get really nervous to the point where i struggle to listen to what they are even saying .

But finally in march i did get a appointment wuth a consultant and i didnt know before the appointment it was about surgery i thought it was just a normal appointment where they do measurements and i just cried to them for the first time and it was the first time i cried to anyone abour it. she told me about me getting surgery and how i would get it soon and i cried so bad out of happiness nearly everyday and the condition is not just affecting someone cosmetically but other people have double vision and many more but for me i have constant eye muscle pain like a pulling feeling so i was so relieved that would be gone

But the surgery is very risky theres a lot of risks that are really common like overcorrection where it goes the other way or double vision and theres many more horrible risks like blindness.but i didnt care and i got an surgery date on the 8th if july but it got cancelled 2 days before because the surgeon wants to be extra careful which i love her for but i still got really upset but she wants me to wear glasses for 2 months to see my real measurements because part of my turn is because of me focusing too much and the surgery can go really wrong if she doesnt know my real measurements without that

And i really want to spread awareness about this condition because no one seems to take it seriously which im so upset about

I am 70 and just have had cataract surgery on one eye.

I also have had gall bladder cancer with surgery to remove it.

I mention all of this, as, at least in my viewpoint, my eyes are one of the MOST important parts.

I, like most everyone, has seen and dealt with poor souls who either do not have eyesight or very limited and it always breaks my heart.

PLEASE be VERY careful, your eye surgeon sounds WONDERFUL!!! and take your time and get it as right as possible.

I will have you in my heart and thoughts when you have your surgery, and I wish you the very best.

We are ALL in this as family here and I send you hugs and the knowledge that I am with you in spirit when you get the surgery done.

Walter

This was difficult for me to read because I was also victim of bullying at school. I don't have strabismus but severe facial tics since I was 10 and like you, I hid in the bathroom to protect myself from insults. I developed severe social anxiety / agoraphobia when I was 16 because of that and it still ruins my "life" now (I'm 44 and disabled with severeal physical and mental health issues).

I'm sure you're a wonderful person, and you don't deserve all this suffering. Schoolmates and teachers can be very cruel, and I'm not surprised when victims commit suicide.

I agree with Walter about the surgery. If your surgeon has a doubt, it seems to be too dangerous for the moment for your eyes. And I think it's better to no hurry about a new surgery that could make things worse.

Just know that this community is here for you and we'll do our best to give you comfort and help.

Your persecutors can go into hell, they are just miserable people. I hope you'll find the peace you deserve 💖🕊️

Many thanks ! It won't get better for me because my brain is too sick because of too many traumas and constant stress since decades. Every year a new disease diagnosed. That's too much. I'll ask if I'm eligible for euthanasia in Switzerland. Only a miracle could save me and I don't believe in miracles anymore (I used to, but it seems to be my fate).

So difficult to read. Kids are so cruel. But teachers doing that as well as just unacceptable.
I'm thankful that the doctor is being so cautious with the surgery. I went for LASIK, paid the initial amount, did the pretesting, and they were trying to just shove me through the door to do the surgery. Out of nowhere my one of my coworkers came out with a nightmare story about his mother-in-law getting up every two hours at night to put eye drops into her eyes. Her Lasik surgery went bad.I immediately cancelled my surgery.

Bear in mind that he had no idea I was going for the surgery. He just came out with this news. I don't believe in God, but I don't know if that was some sort of intervention from something.

And @whywere Walter, man. How are you able to be so upbeat when you're facing so many difficulties? From such a young age you've been through so much.

And @unluckysadness too 😢,so much perseverance but so much suffering too.

I can still remember standing on that street curb in March 1974 and seeing my "parents" driving off in their 1969 Ford LTD. Standing there, the 1st thought was food and then I thought about it and told myself that no matter what, I was going to make it and that I was also never ever going to be like my "parents" and others that I have met through the decades.

Mean, greedy, self-centered and so much more, NOPE! At the end of it all I was and will leave with what I came with, NOTHING!

It is what I do and what I can do for others that matter so much more than a fancy car, fancy wristwatch, clothing and so much more.

I have seen too many people who had so much material things and power and the like and still, always mad, never grabbing enough and just plain miserable.

Like when my "parents" died and my older brother got around 8 million (USD) and I got ZERO, guess what, he is still extremely greedy and always complaining about everything and he does not have to ever lift a finger for food, shelter nothing.

If I cannot help to bring a smile, make someone feel better about themselves and their situation(s), then I have lost.

We are ALL together in this and we have 2 choices for the future, either work TOGETHER or go the way of the dinosaurs.

That is the one overriding aspect about SaSu, is that it is NOT about suicide, but rather about human caring, loving, and thinking and helping.

Like BBC, they are so way out in the ballpark, read wrong, when it comes to SaSu, because if someone want to ctb they WILL and this site is a lot more about loving and helping than anything ever.

Good luck, stay strong!

I have read through this thread and your story really seems heartbreaking. I really don't know what to say that hasn't been said better by others like @whywere already.

All I can add is:
Best of luck to you and I hope things go well with the surgery.
I hope you will keep us posted on how things turn out, no matter what happens.

Wear dark sunglasses. That's what I do. People can't bully you for your eyes if they can't see your eyes. Anyone asks or says you can't wear them, say you have a medical condition that causes light sensitivity. That usually shuts them up.

This is the 3rd thread i've read on here where a messed up or missed surgery ruins lives. You could have lived a happy life :( I wish there was some medical accountability or money compensation. But that won't change what you've been through.

ב''ה,

The LASIK thing is called "Sands of the Sahara" when (potentially microscopic) debris gets into the incision they used to have to make with a special eye scalpel, but there's been a lot of subtle modifications to the standard so e.g. using a laser and extremely filtered air instead apparently heals smoother and is common but may be a pay extra option because it was a decade ago in USA. So if anyone's doing it, ask about that and how they avoid it, it's fairly rare but if you have any opinions how the surface of your eye heals after irritation, sucks if it does happen I'm sure.

For OP, whew, I don't really know from it and sounds like you're having good discussions with the current doctor, I'll vaguely mention if the pain and constant tug in the one spot is what's maddening, just remember to focus on that in your discussions because I get the feeling that getting 99% correction but still having to stretch the exact same spot might be more infuriating than getting 1% overcorrection but at least stretching 'the other way' with muscles and tendons that ain't been scarred up once already, but I don't know anything about this and I could be wrong as pros who see it every day may know the recovery process best.

But, as much as you probably have, relate how miserable the knot or tug or whatever you're feeling in the musculature is so at least you can get relief from that and maybe they can better understand what's unlivable even if it just sounds like the first go around was botched or unfinished. (Can't exactly relate but got by with bent glasses for five years and got some slight everything is fucked up in the area between sinuses, tear ducts, probably some dental alignment stuff and getting punched in the face once not helping, so I can imagine the sensation, and just having one nostril and eustachian tube that only wants to work when the stars align perfectly sure is bad enough.)
