Unless you know of a place where no one might see you or wander along and find you, I wouldn't recommend a tree (mind, it is your choice). A ceiling beam if you live along or if you can find an abandoned house/building.....far less chance of being interrupted.

For my tree, I followed what the posted megathread instructed. Additionally, I had chosen a thick, low-hanging branch (<3 metres from the ground at its base, but well enough to keep me a foot off the ground), tied a non-running knot around it (so that the knot wouldn't slide up to the branch), and then jumped and pulled on the rope. Since the branch did not stress or audibly groan, I decided that it'll do. I will go to that same tree when I decide that it's time.
