I checked in to my hotel Sunday. Had a suitcase, didn't say or do anything out of the ordinary. Failed my attempt. Stayed all day in the hotel, just laying in the bed. Checked out early tonight instead of waiting until morning. The staff didn't really question it too much but I could tell they were surprised I was leaving.

So, for anyone who has worked hospitality and has been there when someone CTBed, did you know? What gave it away?
Or are you someone who was caught by staff before you could do it? What happened?

I'm not a hotel worker, but I found a story where a staff found a body hanging. (Japanese link, with deepl translation)

At work (the hotel), a guest failed to come to the front desk for checkout procedures even after the check-out time had passed. I went to the guest room, knocked, but received no response. When I opened the door with a spare key, the guest had hanged themselves in the room. The scene was so sudden I couldn't comprehend it. Immediately afterward, terror overwhelmed me. I rushed back to the office, but on the way I was shaking violently, my legs tangled, barely able to stand. I finally made it back to the office crying and told the staff there. I was so terrified and shocked that I couldn't stop shaking or crying. Other staff handled the police and other responses. It's been about a week now, but I'm still afraid to enter the guest room. Even in daily life, that scene vividly comes back to me when I open a door unexpectedly, and I get scared. I've suffered significant psychological damage. I often remember it and get scared. As the first person to discover the body, I can't accept having to live with this emotional scar for the rest of my life. Is it possible to claim compensation from the bereaved family?
At least in Japan, staffs (probably front?) will find your body at first. It is strongly recommended to display a warning in front of the door to avoid traumatize them unless you don't care.

I was thinking about this. As someone who witnessed a suicide before - I do not wish to subject anyone to my mess.

On the other hand, since you would have to put up a sign before starting the attempt, it could lead to others noticing you too early and trying to save you. That's not ideal.

My idea was to set up an automated e-mail to the hotel, so it would message x minutes / hours after you attempt. That still allows for people entering because of the noise (depending on method) and seeing then, however. Also, what do you say if you fail? "Don't worry, was just a prank?"

It's... difficult. Sometimes I wish I didn't care about others, would make this so much easier.

Maybe a delayed text message to someone you know to contact the hotel to warn the staff? it usually let's me cancel scheduled texts before they're sent, but I'm not sure about every text messaging service.
