Hi, recently I have read more about the rebreather and I think it's a fantastic option. Since getting N is too difficult for the vast majority, I think building a DB (debreather) is a good option since it's painless and all the parts all legal. The bad part? it's not easy to build one. For that, I suggest to create this thread to post pictures, etc... about building one.

What is a DB?
It's a breathing system that uses a closed loop where CO2 is eliminated from the circuit and the air only has O2 and Nitrogen. As long as the body keeps breathing, there is less and less oxygen and CO2, so the only thing that remains is N (Nitrogen). When you only breath nitrogen, you die. Not painful.

The CO2 is removen thanks to some chemical granules that absorbs CO2 as this one passes through it.

I think this method is as peaceful as N, or at least very peaceful one.

This is a picture of the DB:

You only need to breath as usual and in a few minutes you're done.

So... lets start trying to build one. I'm not specialist but I'm sure between some users we will be able to build one or at least one of it.
So lets start with the first and critical part: the mask.

The mask that is shown in the PPH is one that is inflatable, like this one:
jqlHch.png

As you can see, you can inject air using a syringe.

The other option I have seen for my own is the full masks: it's called Philips Respironics FitLife and it looks like...

The main problem here is that we need to seal it very well because if some oxygen enters in the system, the method WON'T work.
The main problem of this method is that if some oxygen enters the system, then the method won't work. So we need to be very sure that the facemask is correctly placed in the face and with enought pressure. Once you die your muscles will have less tension and that change can cause oxygen to enter inside the facemask and the method won't work because you will be able to breath oxygen again.

As you can see PPH suggest to use some strips to attach it very well to the face:

The ChinStrap
This piece is to ensure you have always your mouth closed even after you CTB.

This piece is normally used on people that you want to keep their mouth closed because they snoore.
It helps to maintain you mouth closed.

Here you have different models on Amazon:

I think this chinstrap is ok because you can fix velcro in it:

This bag here is called "the reservoir bag" and you can Google "reservoir bag" directly:

They look like this:

The granules you see inside this

are called "soda lime" and you can buy it on Amazon or in any aquarium shop. This granules, in contact with CO2, the granules absorbs the CO2 so no CO2 will recirculate in the closed air system. Only nitrogen and oxygen. And the oxygen is kept in your body so you finally will be breathing only nitrogen.

Just making some specific DIY pieces because I cannot find in the market a device or devices that can fit to form a DB.

I will keep you updated.

Seems like a cool diy project. I even have most of the pieces already. I could probably make this and store it until the time is right.

I am spending some hundreds and I am receiving all the pieces. At the moment I am waiting for the sponge, some 3D printed parts and the soda lime.

I think this project is really good. No pain or suffering and all the pieces are legal to buy!

Is that double reservoir for the soda lime there for some special reason?

I don'the know there are 2 reservoirs. I think with one can work but I am replicating the db as exactly as possible to the picture of the PPH.

I guess it might make for more surface area in contact with the CO2, but that's speculating.

Maybe it's a correct theory.

Thanks. Just ordered the 3D pieces right know. I think I will have them in 4 or 5 days.

This method seems very interesting because is painless and is also legal to buy. The idea is to eliminate co2 and oxygen from the closed circuit air. So you end breathing only nitrogen. You die in around 30 minutes. You fall asleep and that'she all.

Did you manage to build it?

and where can I get that container where soda lime is kept?

Won't it be hard to try to breathe by sucking air or nitrogen or whatever gas is in there into your lungs through those canisters? When I wear a mask it's hard enough to breathe. But through a tube attached to big canisters filled with that substance? It looks like it would impede the flow.

I suggest before going to all that trouble to simply try hooking a hose up to the canisters and a mask and seeing if your lungs can pull in air through them.

Also it looks to me like without a filter you would be inhaling particles of that stuff.

Then when you exhale you have to force the carbon dioxide of your exhalation through the canisters again.
