I believe hanging isn't pleasant and is painful but from what I've seen it's over quick for the majority of people, so at least there's that.
If you actually manage to snap your neck and die though I think that's much quicker and if there's pain it would only be for a split second.
However I know someone who broke their neck a few years ago falling down some stairs and they're just fine now so I guess you can be unlucky too.Similar threads
