I was just scrolling on a second hand website and I saw a vintage french game "Le pendu" (literally 'The hanged man"). Now I realize that the game is still for sale in 2025 and in several countries !

I'm against cancel culture, but am I the only one who finds it disturbing ? I mean, we're talking about kids... Okay when I was a kid, we had chocolate cigarettes and racist ads on TV, but here in France we have kids who committ suicide by hanging (I made threat about it). It's like Ouija boards sold in toy stores... And since yesterday, there is a huge controversy about chinese online shop that sells "pedocriminal puppets".

Here is another "game" about hanging https://jeudupendu.fr

I've erased the name of the brands on the pics because I suppose it's against the forum rules. Not here to make advertisement, just to show what exists on this sick planet...

Children are not hanging themselves bc of such a game; they must have a terrible childhood, suffer abuse, neglect and so on. This can make people suicidal at any age. I'm sure these children desperately sought help, but their parents didn't understand them. Then they took the last resort.

I remember we played this game on paper, we even coded this game in school on the computer together with the teacher in the late 80s.

I don't find this disturbing.

I played this on paper too when I was a kid, but my 2025 mind finds it disturbing.

I can't remember any games from my stay. I think we had some. I remember watching tv and group discussions.
We had similar games when I was a kid. Idk maybe they aren't good. Seems odd in my current condition.

Yes we also played this in school but these days when I think about it, isn't it actually absolutely inappropriate to play such a game with kids I mean this game was the first game our teacher played with us back in my first year in school when I was 6.

I ask you: Did you see this game as reality, or was it fun to play it?

I don't think it's inappropriate. This game has been played for generations before us (I would assume this) and it didn't hurt kids.

Everything is so much overthought nowadays, as if there are not many more important problems to be solved in this world - the actual problems of this world have other root causes.

Yes it was fun and i liked it when i was 6 but now I am 26 and i have a rope and plan to die by full hanging therefore I remembered my childhood and also remembered this game. I got sad then because I thought oh wow so the spoiler how my life will end was already there back in 2006 when i was a little 6 years old child….

I mean as a child when thinking about hangman, I thought about execution than suicide as I didn't know suicide existed at the time. I mean the basic concept of dying is something children see from media even if its cartoonish and more child friendly form so from that aspect I don't see whats wrong with it in my opinion as its just stick figures being hanged. Obviously tho it may seem more disturbing to us who know more about death and suicide now. Tho I still don't feel disturbed by it now with this knowledge but thats cus I am so desensitised to death and suicide.

Ah Hangman. Teaching kids that incorrect spelling kills. /s

This is not disturbing at all given its context. I do not see a problem with it. I always think it is fun to see how many extra things I can get the person to draw to give me more chances.

Ok, from this pov it looks different, but you should not reflect it onto the game you played as a 6-year-old child. It's totally independent of the situation you are in today and it isn't linked in any way. I'm sorry you have to go through this.

It was a common game in elementary school. You could even play it on any piece of paper with a word you'd think of, and the others had to guess it.

You drew the gallows and the lines for each letter of your chosen word.

Each person would say a letter, and whoever guessed the word first won. The first and last letters of the chosen word were written down as a clue.

For each mistake made (wrong letter), a part of the hanged man was drawn: first the head, then the torso, then one arm... the other arm, one leg... the other leg. And the final line at the neck (which signifies death, game lost).

It's a fun game for the off-topic forum lol
Even cartoons used to depict suicides and nobody thought it was crazy. Like the unforgettable "Blue Cat Blues" episode of Tom and Jerry.
