I'm going to be a nurse soon, and I just feel empty. The one goal I had was to get an education so I could feel I've done something with my life and I only feel empty. I thought I'd feel proud or I don't know, anything. I just feel like Ive accomplished the one goal in my life, and with that the suicide thoughts have been so strong. Even stronger than when I made my first attempt. I gave life one more chance and did something and now all I wanna do is leave.

This might not help much, but just know you're not alone. I was actually going to make a post about something similar but decided against it and scrolled a bit and found this thread. I'll be graduating in December of next year and life after graduation feels so incredibly scary to me, but none of my classmates I've asked about it seems to share my same fear somehow. Maybe they're just masking for some reason. Anyway, I'm sure you and I will both start to develop our own goals, hopes, dreams, etc after graduation. Stay strong 🫶

No advice on the empty feeling because I also have that and can't resolve it
But congrats on your degree, that's not easy to get and a big accomplishment

Can you pinpoint where the emptiness is coming from?

Probably doesn't mean much but congrats on getting your degree. Wish I could be half as accomplished as you but graduating high school is all I got. I don't even have a direction in life to strive towards, just aimlessness that's eating me from the inside out.

I feel it's coming from me knowing my one accomplishment I've ever wanted out of life will be done. I'll have nothing else I'll enjoy or want to strive towards, and I've noticed the suicidal thoughts have been extra strong lately because of this

No other personal goals?

What motivated you to become a nurse? Solely to learn to *become" one? There must have been things about *being* one that appealed to you and pushed you through the rigorous program.

Nursing is a good career and there lots of ways you can develop it if you want to frame it as goals. Furthermore, you can advance your education even more if you want. You don't have to rest in your laurels just yet.

I know I don't, it just feels like this is it. Tbh, I went into it mainly because I like science and liked the less days worked compared to a 9-5, but it's still work. I can't stand that we all need to work to live when we don't even like being alive.

Maybe and hopefully you'll find something new to strive torwards whether it's in the realm of nursing or something else. It doesn't have to be it if you don't really want it to (I know easier said than done but it's true). I hope the service you are providing to others sweetens the whole thing too.

Thank you, I really appreciate you taking time to both read and reply to me. I hope you've got goals to strive for too, you seem like the kind of person this world needs

Congrats on your accomplishment!!

I remember when I graduated I was so full of excitement for the possibilities in life, and in MY life specifically. However - as it pertains to you - maybe you are not passionate about the career? It sounds like you may have just chosen the field b/c you knew you could do it.

Theres a few things I notice about modern times. -

  • With the invention of AI, chatbots, etc. Nothing is new. Nothing is novel. Nothing seems exciting. It just seems like everything has been done so its hard to get excited about ANYTHING at all. I feel like we are all just working to live.

  • The only thing I see as potentially exciting is the potential to be able to fund your other interests in life. But doesn't sound like you have any right now. Which is most often the case for those with depression and anhedonia.

As for myself I've never really gotten back my passion for anything since I became depressed and have watched the world spiral into the mess that it is today. The only reason I am still here is because Im just not as strongly motivated to suicide as I had been in the past. Any goal I move toward nowadays would be to ensure I can continue "existing" in comfortable living quarters, not due to any deep sense of excitement or accomplishment. I have gotten to the point where I can just exist on the planet until the day I am motivated to check out without feeling any strong passion towards anything at all. I hope this does not become your fate. Its a pointless destiny.

I couldn't care any less about my state right now. It just doesn't matter since it seems like there is no where to go in terms of both physical direction or mental aspiration.

I don't know how you feel about actually going into the career of nursing, and if you still have an interest/passion for doing it as a job. But I will say, as someone who's had to have a lot of medical treatment, it has made a world of difference to me when a nurse has been respectful and kind. Even if they're doing something simple like changing bandages or taking blood, when I've had a nurse who treats me like a human and speaks to me kindly, that's been a huge difference from those who are cruel and uncaring. So if you are still interested in it as a career, you could make a big difference in people's day-to-day lives, and it would be a valuable thing to have that impact on people.
