I need a distraction, something big that I can sink hundreds of hours into. Preferably singleplayer for social anxiety reasons but I'm open. I just finished my living dex in pokemon at the same time as 100%ing another monster hunter game and I'm feeling lost.

i love the bioware games, mass effect and dragon age. bg3 is another good one. cyberpunk was fun to 100%, so were dishonoured 1 and 2 and deathloop. outer wilds.

idk about specifically monster hunter games though, @Dr Iron Arc might have some suggestions.

I'm not a Monster Hunter guy but for Pokémon you could always try shiny hunting. It's a little monotonous in Z-A but it's actually super easy just fly to the same spot over and over.

Lose yourself in grinding or story as well? I was nuts about Final Fantasy as a kid and found them very engrossing. First one was 7 but made it through 1 to 12 at some point (not 3 because wasn't released in the west for a while or 11 which was MMO). Still replay some every now and then.

Shiny hunting in Z-A is a little easier since shinies don't despawn, and there are already methods specific to areas 😀

I sank 300 hours in Moon alone, and there's always something to do postgame, be it shiny hunting, Nuzlockes, or basically anything you find challenging and enjoyable.

The obvious answer here is Stardew Valley assuming you haven't played it already.

What about Kingdom Come: Deliverance & Kingdom Come: Deliverance II

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is an action role-playing video game set in an open-world environment and played from a first-person perspective. It utilises a classless role-playing system, allowing the player to customise their skills to take on roles such as warrior, bard, thief, or a hybrid of these. Abilities and stats grow depending on what the player does and says through branched dialogue trees. During conversations, the time a player takes to make a decision is limited and has an effect on their relationships with others. Reputation is based on player choices and therefore can bring consequences.

Shenmue 1 + 2, Deadly Premonition, Dragon Quest 5, Persona 4, Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts, Boku no natsuyasumi, Akiba's Trip, Shin-chan: Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation -The Endless Seven-Day Journey, Disaster Report and Raw Danger, Dragon's Dogma 1+2. Not all of these are long RPGs, but they are very atmospheric and you can lose yourself easily.

Maybe not something you can sink hundreds of hours into, and I'm not sure exactly what kinds of games you are into, but might I suggest Ori and the Blind Forest? It's a nice platformer game I quite enjoy, and you might like it too.

I second cyberpunk. It's very good.

For those who played the game, do you ever wish you had Johnny's engram in you? I imagine it would feel a lot less lonely

I know someone already suggested it (>_<) but I stand behind Stardew! I get too lost in that game sometimes and it's a shock how long I've played it without getting bored.

Additionally, if you're looking for a game with more comedy I'd recommend The Stanley Parable. If you play on Steam it's on a huge discount right now and is being sold for $10. The Stanley Parable is a pretty meta game and the Narrator is just hilarious, cannot stress how funny his lines are

Hollow Knight: If you're playing blind it's a minimum of 17 hours to beat, but much longer to 100%. Hand drawn characters, interactive environment, I'm 35 hours in with 97% completion. There's currently a sequel, Silksong, which is actively getting updates.

Crypt of the Necrodancer: Constantly on sale (~75% off), endless dungeon generator where you defeat enemies to the beat of the music (levels change every play to stay fresh, nearly unlimited seeds). It's easy to play but hard to master. If you have a Playstation I'll forever salute you if you get the platinum trophy. Currently 100+ hours in and I haven't even beaten the final boss yet.

Any online trading card game: Technically single player playing against online strangers but I've been binge playing a few and constantly updating and improving decks as I collect cards. Been doing it since 2018 and took year long breaks because I was nearly addicted.

Hypnospace Outlaw! It might not be a game for everyone, but I love that you can just lose yourself for hours on end exploring this alternative 90s internet and seeing how interconnected and personal it is, how much soul and passion went into the webpages, not just the devs' but the characters' too. It's such a unique experience, definitely recommend a thorough playthrough and not just going for the main plot right away, and DAMN I'm sad Dreamsettler (its sequel) was cancelled 😢😭 I hope it gets the Hytale treatment and will be continued but we can only dream...

I have no clue if anyone suggested this, but I also wanted to add:

Balatro

I highly recommend you download the Hidden Aces mod on Nexus for that "brain off" type of gameplay. The only tradeoff is that you won't get access to the cosmetics provided in the "Friends of Jimbo 4" update, which include cards themed around games like "Slay the Princess", "Bugsnax", "Fallout", etc.

Guide for the Mod:

  1. Download mod on Nexus
  2. Go on Steam and browse its local files
  3. Make two folders—one for the modded .exe of Balatro (in case you ever want to remove the mod) and one for the un-modded version
  4. Place the un-modded Balatro .exe one of the folders
  5. Extract the mod files, which you got from Nexus, into the local files
  6. Run the game on Steam like normal
    • You'll know if you did it right if, in the top right corner, "HIDDEN ACES v.1. something" is there
  7. Have fun!
