I live in the US and my family is poor, would the funeral cost cause them to go in debt?

If you ain't got life insurance it will probably be hard to bury you . Average funeral cost between 7k-12k depends on what services you're family wants . You can get direct cremation from as little as 800 also direct burials can be cheaper it's all up to you're family if they want to go all out or just be simple .at least that's what google says

In Europe it´s possible to have the ashes scattered or buried in the forest. Maybe this is also possible in the US ?

Most funeral homes expect you to full payment upfront .You can sometimes negotiate to pay a portion with some funeral homes Best to pay upfront tho.

First things first: you are not required to have a funeral, but you are required to have the body disposed of. Funeral costs, funeral home services- are generally out of pocket, paid for by insurance etc. But if you have little to no money, your body must and will be disposed of. There are some programs out there that assist with disposal costs, but this varies from state to state, usually.

Essentially, the lowest cost out of pocket situation would be for your family to pay for the cremation out of pocket. This can range from 600-800 USD. They can then hold any memorial services privately in the home. Anything involving burial is going to cost more and is hard to get at a lower cost, because this requires more work by the funeral home and then there is the cost of the plot. Basically, if you're poor- you're getting cremated.
If you live in a state where funding is available, it may cover the cost of your cremation for your family. If not, your family will have to call around to the coroners office and figure out what can be done.

I advise you to do the research before you make any choices. This will be a difficult situation and having the necessary ducks in a row may take enormous pressure off of those left behind.

here is a post with some links to information.
This site also has some information on different state programs.

This depends on the funeral home/service. Some companies allow clients to begin payment plans earlier in life so that the bill is taken care of by the time the event occurs. Usually, in this situation the remainder must be paid immediately if the client kicks off earlier. Occasionally, the company will return most/all to the family if the family chooses to use a different service/home. But I have never heard of a home that allows a family to start a payment plan for services rendered- it's just too risky, probably.
