True, societies are irrational, they intentionally restrict the N without deep understanding, little they realize car as means of suicide and closed their eyes right away.
The crab-mentality-preventors also use deception in their campaign, most probably to catch public attention and government's funding. Life is harder when lies become the norm.

Interesting article. At the peak of last century 1963, when B was widely available, deaths by suicide were 18 per 100,000 people. Probably most of them were suffering adults. But the chemical had been around long before that. In the 1940's, suicide rate was much lower, below 10. I guess suicide rate is affected mainly by social situation and culture, not so much by the available of easy and painless methods. During war time, survival instinct was probably stronger.
