Discussion Does anyone else have a particular fancy for horror?

I always loved horror, particularly grew up with Lovecraftian/Cosmic Horror Annihilation or Sunshine like but I developed a passionate interest in it in general as one of the few interests I still hold; my love extends from horror classics like Saw, Scream, The Twilight Zone or Terrifier to the likes of first few Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Gingerdead Man, Messiah of Evil etc. The anticipation is genuinely addicting, and the more silly characters in slightly less "credible" series just have a sort of charm to them that makes me easily remember their charms for years.

No matter my mood, a couple scares is enough to make my heart thump and make me feel "alive", alongside the twists along the way, which means a lot to someone like me. I would try to watch something that gives me that feeling when I'm most depressed so I don't have to think about it as much.

i really liked lovecraftian/cosmic stuff i suppose i still do but i dont really read much anymore. at the mountains of madness was great tho lol i still kinda remember it. also not rly horror but obsession was really good in recent memory of what i watched.

I'm into horror too. I think what I like about it is that it's usually darker and deals with themes you don't really see in other kinds of media. I'm a big fan of Lovecraft and Harlan Ellison.
I also get what you mean about horror movies somehow putting you in a better mood. I feel the same way.

Some of my favorites are The Shining, Possession, Prometheus, Inside (2007), Martyrs (2008), and The House That Jack Built—though that one's probably more of a serial killer movie than straight-up horror.
My favorite movie is The Evil Within (2017) (it has nothing to do with the video game). I love the way it portrays dreams and how dream logic works.
My favorite scene is basically a metaphor for mental illness. A kid and his mom go into a haunted house attraction, but it's completely boring, and he says, "We got ripped off. We should get our money back." Then his mom turns to him and says, "What makes you think a nightmare ends. Ever ends?" And that's when all the horror starts.
The whole movie has a lot of moments that really hit if you've dealt with mental illness or know what that kind of experience feels like.

Ooh I love me some good horror, especially when it's psychological in nature or involves nightmare sequences. I also love to write horror myself and it's something I think I'm quite good at. A couple years back I wrote a horror novel when I was staying at a psych unit and when I was coming up to a scary part, the nurse checked on me in the middle of the night and it spooked me lol. Was kinda funny.

Well... maybe. Honestly, I didn't find it that shocking when I watched it. If Martyrs shocked you that much, though, don't even think about watching Inside. Just don't do it.
Maybe I'm just missing some empathy, who knows. I tend to empathize much more with animals, and I take any movie that shows violence against them really badly. Cannibal Holocaust is completely unforgivable to me because they actually killed a giant turtle and a baby wild boar.
In Andrei Rublev, they broke several horses' legs just for some pretty pathetic action scenes, and they also set a cow on fire. Tarkovsky even wanted to burn a cow in Mirror, but the lead actress threatened to walk off the production if he did. Fuck Tarkovsky.
And in Come and See, they machine-gunned a real cow. So... yeah. Maybe I shouldn't be saying anything after all.

All of those films could have done without the pointless cruelty to animals—and they would've been better for it. I actually like the Cannibal Holocaust soundtrack and the message the film is trying to convey, but that kind of thing is simply unacceptable.

I think maybe for me is the fact that the film is about the concept of torture itself, i dunno, usually i can handle gore just fine but there's just something about that story concept that really makes me uneasy
Compared to say like maybe Hellraiser or Event Horizon where there are also quite gruesome scenes but it's mostly in the context of fantasy

I'm a casual fan of cosmic horror and I really enjoy classic gothic horror. The occasional bad 80s slasher or zombie movie can be fun, too.

Personally, The Exorcist is the most disturbing horror film I've ever seen and I will never watch it again.

I agree with you about The Exorcist... The part that scared me the most from that movie is when the girl that was possessed crawled down the stairs upside down and backwards on her hands and feet and there was this eerie music playing. But then again, when I wrote my horror novel at the hospital, it was a combination of The Exorcist and Nightmare on Elm Street, which explains why it's so terrifying.
