I'm sure a lot of us here can relate to only staying alive for other people, which is currently the main thing holding me back. I met my current partner in the psych ward of all places, except it is not too often we are able to see each other due to long-distance. I don't want to make this too long, but I have this feeling that I am not going to be here too much longer, as I have been thinking of various methods and drafting a suicide note to give some of the few people in my life closure. All I want is for them to truly be able to move on from this and find peace. For as long as I can remember, I've been doing everything for other people and putting everyone else's needs above my own. I have to start doing things for myself instead of worrying about pleasing the people around me. I care about my partner's feelings more than I care about my own but I have never felt more hopeless in life than I do right now. Referring back to the title, does anyone believe that suicide can be justified, and is there any way I can give them as much closure as I possibly can? I just feel fundamentally broken beyond belief and I need a way out.

Suicide in most cases is justifiable and not selfish. The ones getting mad at suicidal people and calling it selfish are the selfish ones. We're stuck in our lives 100% of the time, yet they want to force us to live in pain just to make them happy when we're just side characters to their own lives?

One of the only times I think suicide is selfish is if you have children that depend on you. At that point you have already made the selfish decision to make them, and to off yourself means to cause them more trauma.

Its going to be very hard to justify it to others.

They're going to think it's selfish. I think, sure, maybe it is selfish. But is there something wrong with that? If there was one thing we should be allowed to be selfish about, it's our own lives. Nobody should be able to dictate us on how to live, or not live, our lives.

I agree with this and thats why I am not having kids it would just be selfish of me

Yes. People commit suicide for various reasons and you never know why. But people don't kill themselves for attention. You don't get attention when you're already dead. They killed themselves for relief. Relief from pain and agony. And not just from terminal cancer. Pain and agony from mental illness and physical pain and other pain. Don't judge unless you know what they're going through

It's justifiable only with a terminal illness. Otherwise, a very self serving act. Suicide is a very personal self involved proposition. Especially in the modern age. There are a multitude of possible solutions before the idea of suicide. It's just people for whatever reason don't want to or care to explore or engage them.
I think trauma is also a valid reason. Unfortunately, trauma is something you have to fight for the rest of your life, similar to addiction. You can do better or worse at it, but it will forever be a part of you. I believe if someone doesn't wish to fight that battle, they have the right to end their life. Currently fighting my way through it and very close to giving up. Living like this is constant torture.

Why do you need a justification?
When you're dead, you won't have to explain yourself to anyone.

Honestly, I don't really know, and I've wondered that myself. I just want to be understood by others. I want them to know how much pain I was really in and that I tried as hard as I possibly could to stay alive, but that there was nothing anybody could have done to "save" me. I don't think that anybody who knows me irl would think it was the "right" thing for me to do, but at the same time, they aren't me and don't live with my brain.

Yeah, exactly, I have a lot of trauma from my childhood, and it literally affects my everyday life. I can't even use sleep as an escape anymore because I have nightmares like every other day. I always wonder who I could've been if trauma and mental illness didn't affect my life at such a young age but I also didn't have it as bad as a lot of other people.

I think it's also a cultural question as to what is considered suicide vs martyrdom vs something else. A lot of cultures practice, or used to practice, forms of ritual suicide like suttee. In our time and place, is suicide justified? It can be in very rare cases. In most cases, I would say no, but just because it isn't justified doesn't mean it isn't understandable, or that it can't be forgiven, or that we should always use extraordinary means to prevent it.
