I noticed in my country Youtube doesn't show any videos when searching for suicide forum or Sanctioned Suicide. But I am always using a VPN anyway.
A member on here inspired me to do this.
I will take Youtube comments from this video. I will not mention the names of the users to protect them.
Maybe we can do this with multiple videos. But I start with The Darkest internet rabbit hole. I think it is really counterproductive these channels cover now SaSu. They bring a lot of gawkers. And these true crime videos are always slightly dubious. Obviously they should not make videos about this place if their audience is this young. And obviously age restriction is a joke on Youtube. The audience on Youtube is way too young. And they basically don't achieve anything except making a long ad for this forum. They act like they want to spread awareness but this argument is a joke. Showing mostly uncensored screenshots. Alluding to substances. Moreover, in my country the media isn't covering this forum at all. And as a consequence there are not that many members from my country on here. Look at polls how many members found the forum through Youtube.
So it is obviously the Streisand effect and it backfires. I think they are not that dumb that they actually think a video on this forum had a net positive impact on anything. The forum has a recovery page because of past pressure I think. But at this point they just bring new members to this place. But I start to ramble.
Comments:
1. Calling a grieving mother a narcissist for having a problem with the site that helped her daughter commit suicide really tells me the commenter wasn't the brightest.
2. The most effective way is to wait 90-130 years. Works every time.
3. An echo chamber for suicidal ideation chat is the worst idea ever
4. This sounds like a hotspot for predators to prey on suicidal and depressed girls.
5. Not even a minute ago and it's already age restricted
6. "We don't encourage this"..."TAKE THE BUS"
7. saying you're terrified, then later being found dead is tragic and haunting..
8. Turkey Tom not naming the Poison, Thanks for being a real one Tom
9. I absolutely fucking hate Marquis. I don't know how you can hand someone a handbook on killing yourself with pickling salt and OTC drugs and call that "support". WTF.
10. my cousin used this site and I miss them every day. never kill yourself folks.
11. I had a friend in high school who had suicidal ideation and anorexia. She would talk about drinking bleach and pass it off as a joke, but she was hospitalized for attempted suicide multiple times. We're not close anymore (no falling out, just life moving in different directions) but I keep up with her on facebook and she's in her late 20s, alive, and in a loving relationship. Really proud of her. She never thought she would live this long, but she made it.
12. I own a "stop gooning" hat and I've had 4 different dudes from the gym ask if they could take a picture with it
13. it's so cathartic seeing this upload, since i was almost part of those 50 people. i know exactly what three day regiment this girl did before dying, because I'd almost completed it before my brother called me and interrupted me before i took the final lethal substance. I'm probably going to end up as another one of those victims, you never truly forget what you learn on there.
14. When the serial killer is a website
15. Seems extremely likely that the majority of people there are not there because they're depressed, they're there because they get off on watching depressed people take the bus
16. i lost my best friend to suicide and it's the worst thing that's ever happened to me in my entire life. we never got her phone back from the police but she never left a note or anything. it was so unexpected. i really hope she wasn't interacting with forums like this.
17. Oh, thank God. Work is boring as fuck today.
18. does anyone remember internet investigator putting this video out a week ago but deleted it cause she didn't want people finding the forum cause the c.t.b phrase made it very easy to find and she didn't want that
19. My ex literally used to hang around on the site & refused to get off it no matter how much I tried helping emNever thought I'd see it in a turkey tom video
20. Such a normie take to demonize the only place people in the deepest days of their suffering come together to breathe and not feel alone.
21. imagine going to a forum of people depressed and shaming them
22. not censoring any of the names is wild
23. That you can talk about it, use the word "murder", but cannot say the word itself, and have to constantly censor things... We do live in an Orwellian dystopia. This needs to be discussed. The site needs to be named. The word has to be said.
24. I find the taboo and the "holy cow" in relation to suicide questionable and rather part of the problem. People should be allowed to discuss the topic openly and rationally and about the negative impact of a person's suicide on their relatives and those around them. By the way, I also recommend reading the short story "Don't Feed the Pig", which deals with this topic and its disturbing nature, but not with the usual emotionalization, so much in advance.
25. You can hate me for saying this, but forums like this get created because the US' response to S word thinking or thoughts is so out of date. Any indication if told to a doctor and you'll immediately get sent to a psych ward, which is basically like a glorified prison and you basically lose a lot of your rights. Just for having those thoughts and not acting on anything. I told a doctor only I had passive thoughts with no plan, no access to weapons, 24/7 family monitoring, absolutely no intent was just reaching out for advice, and I had police literally come to my house, send me to a ward for 8 days. I know I was dumb to say it but still.
26. I feel like people who try to discuss the website don't understand it or it's users. People who have struggled with depression and suicidalation don't want to be told not to do anything. They're tired, broken and have had enough with everyone telling them it gets better. They want to be open about their mental issues and feel accepted. No one there wants to be judged while many others just want resources on how to "catch the bus"
So back to me. I tried to take many comments that were the most popular. But I scrolled through a while and some comments with less likes are defending this forum. I am not sure what to do now. I think I won't comment every single comment in detail. (Bro I did it...) It was a while ago I watched parts of the video. I am not sure what the poster of the first comment is refering to,
1. I think they are refering to the arguments from SaSu with the fixthe26 mothers. I think I would see some comments about them also critically. But it was a very heated and sort of toxic disagreement with them. In general I think this forum moved in the right direction since this controversy is now less ubiquitous. With less antagonizing valid criticism inside the community can be raised. I think the we against them dynamic wasn't healthy at that time point. I have seen empathy towards loved ones who lost someone and who posted on here when looking for reasons. But I am not that often in suicide discussion.
2. I mean....not helpful? But whatever.
3. I think the person was never suicidal themselves and they were not a member of this place to judge this forum in a fair way. The person has a final judgement about this place by watching a 40 minutes video with a one sided approach to cover it. But I think this applies to most people that comment.
4. There are probably bad actors on here and we address this. But this also applies to many other internet communities. I think most places related to mental health and vulnerable people attract predators. There are stories about Youtube kids for example. But still no one denies the right to exist to these communities. Or the Twitter serial killers and stuff like that.
5. I am not sure about the mechanism. Isn't it able to restrict a video from start (minute 0?). I mean shall this show how responsible the creator handled the issue? Personally, I don't think there is a net loss of members when publishing these videos. I would consider it far more likely there is an increase in members. And I think the atmosphere of the video presents this forum as the forbidden apple. And the number of visitors after such videos show there not a few people who like to gawk/"watch us live in nature" after diving deep into this edgy topic while most of them will forget and never care about it again 2-3 days after watching the video.
6. I mean we also make jokes about suicide. Some videos portray abbreviations like ctb problematic while the person themselves jokes about it while insinuating intent to drive people to kill themselves. I mean who really benefits of such comments? Is there really a surplus value through such videos? It is an infotainment documentary and the audience is treating it like that. I doubt the educational value of these videos. They are contributing to a problematic handling of this topic by demonizing us.
7. Not sure what they are refering to. I would assume someone wrote in a goodbye thread they were terrified and then the person committed suicide. I mean it isn't as uncommon. Committing suicide is a very serious act that involves a lot of pain. And I am warning regularly that one should think the decision through because often this step has irreversible consequences. I would agree that suicide is often a tragedy. But it doesn't really change the fact that some lives are beyond terrifying and this won't change whether this community exists or not....
8. I mean....is it really that hard to find out? They are kidding themselves when watching those videos. Such videos are like advertisements for this forum. I
think I already elaborated on that earlier.
9. I am not sure who wrote this comment. It seems like a loved one who mourns about a loss of a loved one. I can sort of understand the perspective to be angry on the forum. I might be angry too in her position. On the other hand, there are loved ones that don't judge this forum as much. Some of them understand why such a place exists and probably always will exist.
10. I think there is not really something to add. I can understand where they are coming from. But the stories of members on here are so heterogeneous that I cannot really say anything specific about it. I think it is very painful to lose someone to suicide. And some of the affected people become suicidal themselves.
11. That's great for her. And I wish everyone on SaSu could have such a success story. But life doesn't always guarantee success when trying to fight back. I think there were members who thought this forum needs more recovery stories. And has to highlight them more often. I think there is a lot of truth in that.
But that's also a duty of member who actually achieved that.
12. I am not sure why this comment exists. But it seems to confirm my assumption that channels of true crime Youtubers are not the best place to discuss this topic....
13. It is very good that this person didn't commit suicide. It reminds me of my own story. I also almost drunk SN. And I only didn't go through it because my friends intervened and called the police. But here I am still suicidal. I think it is very good not to cut off friends when being suicidal. And to reach out when your ambivalent about this step. I think the lesson probably for her is don't commit suicide too lightly. And I would fully agree with this statement one should be really really careful and remind oneself that this is an irreversible step. Though, there are situations of members on here that are fucked beyond repair and who suffer for many many years. I think in open and liberal societies suicide should not be a crime. And in most places online and real life it is treated like that...I think sharing awareness that this step has serious consequences is good though.
Had to take a break from writing. Need to hurry up....
14. I mean...it is sort of mystification of this place. I think the daily suffering of many on here is far more mundane and less interesting
15. Personally, I think it is very small minorities with such intentions. As I said such people are attracted to vulnerable people no matter what.
16. I think leaving a note or explaining the reasons while alive is really the right choice. I thought about creating a thread for spreading awareness of that. When loved ones have to ask themselves these question till the rest of their lives that's quite painful. But I try not to be involved too much into suicide discussions.
17. ...confirms some previous assumptions. Not the right place, not the right audience. And as a consequence attracts a lot of gawkers to this site.
18. All of these videos make it quite easy. Some more than others. You don't need a PhD to find this place after watching such a video.
19. Might show some value of this forum. Might show addictive elements. Hard to judge without knowing the specific case. I try to give a fairer judgement of your comments compared to most of you when you were commenting about this place.
20. I think I won't comment too much on positions in favor of SaSu. Based. Lol.
21. Not sure who is shaming who? The creator of this forum shames us? Could be true...
22. True
23. I am not sure what exactly is this position for. In favor of showing the name of the forum when reporting on this place? I am not sure whether I am in favor of that. I think in general media should either show a balanced picture of this place or reduce the coverage to a minimum.
24. Sounds interesting
25. and 26. contain a lot of truth in my opinion.
Long thread. Very long thread. I hope I gave a fair share of comments. You can share your opinions. and criticize my takes on them.
