Having tried nitrous oxide, I don't really understand how they did this. Can you get big gas tanks of it?

Sounds like it might have been nitrogen instead of nitrous oxide. I've seen other news articles confuse the two.

4 YOUTHS FALL VICTIM TO ASPHYXIATION IN CEDAR DENTAL OFFICE

Four ``good kids'' are dead, the apparent victims of asphyxiation from inhaling laughing gas in a storage area of a dentist's office. However, Cedar City police on Tuesday morning had not been notified by the state medical examiner of the exact cause of death.

Happened over thirty years ago. Victims were not suicidal. Tragic accident, but demonstrates apparent efficacy of N2O in causing death. Large tanks of N2O obtainable through auto parts stores for racing contain some repellent additive to discourage/prevent use for suicide or recreational purposes.
"The problem with nitrous oxide is that it competes with oxygen, and if you are in a closed area with no oxygen being supplemented, it can be deadly."
