I think you will have some explaining to do to TSA if you are in the US. But you can read up on that at the TSA website.

An unknown jar or a jar of powder in your checked bag will be at the top of the TSA watch list.
Bomb
Drugs
They will not know and will ask.

I'd have a good excuse ready...They will probably either say no outright to you bringing it with you or they will want to test it. sounds like more trouble than its worth to me at least v.v

I do not believe the job of the TSA is to accept a plausable answer.
The day they get caught letting something slip through because the traveler said it was "ok" Is the last day of their life as a TSA screener.

The problem is I think you are only allowed a certain amount of powdered substance. Even shampoo they could ask you about. Cosmetics in general seem to be an issue, because you can only bring a certain amount. There are a lot of YouTubes about this topic also.

Also when they start asking questions I hope you actually know how to make jerky.

Honestly I think it would be fine in your checked luggage. I'd probably just put it in a mason jar with masking tape labeled "curing salts." A little Google search and I found a TSA page that says "we encourage you to place non-essential powders greater than 12oz in your checked bags."

So while there's a chance they might search it, I'm not sure it's any less safe than mailing it. I'd be more worried if you're going international and thru customs screening. I think domestic it should be fine.

I think there is more leniency with checked baggage yes. When i have flown, or planned to fly I just want carry on to make the process more simple.

Various bomb detectors detect nitrogen compounds, SN contains nitrogen, so yes, it's most likely detectable as an explosive.
