My roommate takes St. John Wort and it seems to work for him, although he has to take 2 or 3 pills a day as it's not very strong. There is also 5-HTP and ashwaganda.

I've had som positive effects from regular vitamins; B12, B2, and iron, primarily. It's in no way a miracle cure, but I'd still recommend it. It's cheap, widely available and very safe.

There are many deficits that can cause depression and you should have a look into that. Vitamin D deficit e. g. can cause depression and when you are inside all day this can worsen your mental state.

I take 20.000 IE daily now. This is a lot, but my body absorbs it poorly.

Recommended daily dose for vitamin D is 4000 UI, I think. Going outside and having skin exposure to the sun for at least 15-20 minutes should help too! Rhiino is correct that many vitamin deficiencies can cause depression, it might be a good idea to also try a basic multivitamin so you know you have your basics covered!
