A 'dark ride' is classed as an indoor amusement park ride where passengers travel through a series of scenes in guided vehicles. So- ghost trains but anything else themed counts. Doesn't necessarily need to be dark or spooky.

My favourites are from my childhood and, from the UK. I haven't been to many other places. But, Chessington World of Adventures used to have: 'The Fifth Dimension' and, 'Professor Burp's Bubbleworks'. The first, you were being asked to aid a robot character to rid his world of a monster. They pretended to shrink everyone down and then, you passed through an oversized TV set. The sets were so cool and the music was great. The robot wore Fisher Price rollerskates- which I always really envied. I had a bizarre crush on the robot! I think it was his stubble.

'Professor Burp's Bubbleworks' was a water ride through a soda factory. Lots of fun, colourful scenes. Brilliant music again and, at the end, you meandered through a winding arch of water jets. People would always reach up and soak everyone in the boat. Sadly- they both eventually got replaced by (in my opinion) inferior rides.

The other one- which I suppose isn't strictly a dark ride was/ is 'Hex' at Alton Towers. Based on an optical illusion I suppose- but, really cool. Thorpe Park also used to have 'Phantom Fantasia' which was really good before it became 'Wicked Witches Haunt' but eventually burnt down.

It's lucky these days that there are so many POV videos of rides. It gives some way to see ones we may never experience. Plus, they do have a few of the ones above- so, I've re-lived them from time to time.

How about you? Any you liked? Any you hated? Any you miss?
