I've been all alone for 10+ years, last years I've been more depressed then ever. I am 22 now. The thing is that I am still in college and I want to finnish my education. I don't have motivation anymore and I am depression about my whole life, no girlfriends, no friends etc.

Does anybody know if antidepressants can work? So I can suddently be happy about life and be more motivated to do my work.

Ik spreek ook Nederlands.

Antidepressants don't make one "suddenly" happy. Different types work differently for different people and they usually take several weeks for the benefits to be slowly felt. Mine help me regulate my more extreme mood swings, as I discovered when I took myself off them for a year or so before going back on them but I'm still depressed, anxious, suicidal and self-harm. 🤷

Someone else asked this exact question a few hours ago, maybe look at that thread.

Antidepressants can help a lot of people, but as mentioned earlier, they don't magically make you all happy, they take time and sometimes you have to try different ones to see which help you. I guess it also has a lot to do with whether your depression stems from trauma, as therapy might work better than meds. Personally antidepressants have never helped me in over 20 years of different ones. I'm now on lithium with an antidepressant for treatment resistant depression, but it's still doing nothing at all.

I actually just posted about this elsewhere, but antidepressants are not the cure all. However, they do work for a lot of people. Psychopharmacology is one of those things that take a lot of trial-and-error to find something that works for you. Even if it hasn't had much luck for me yet (though I have a treatment resistant major depressive disorder), I think it's an avenue that is worth exploring. You never know if it will help you until you try it, but you have to be willing to have patience and give the medication(s) time to have any effect.

The last time I saw a psychiatrist he asked if I felt sad, he told me there are tablets to stop me feeling sad but there are no tablets to make me feel happy.

Any medication I have tried previously has been useless (except benzos to chill me out) but it will depend a lot on your individual circumstances and whether you are doing anything like therapy in conjunction with it.

I have tried a few different antidepressants. Most caused severe sexual side effects. My junk just wouldn't work, until I had an honest talk with my Dr. Now I'm on Effexor and my junk is fairly happy. If it weren't for the Effexor, I would have, most likely, CTB'd by now. The antidepressants don't make you happy, they decrease the lows so the normal can seem like a happy.
