Il 27 agosto del 1950 Cesare Pavese moriva. Aveva deciso di non attendere il caso, la malattia, ma di far decidere alla volontà. Si chiuse in una stanza dell'hotel Roma di Torino e si riempì di barbiturici. Non si decide di nascere, si può decidere di morire. Queste ultime parole che Pavese lasciò sul comodino sono un commiato leggero che scarica a terra colpe, responsabilità, dolori. Tutti assolti, perché la fatica del vivere non pretende che indulgenza.

Yes. Another poet I know who used them was Mario de Sá-Carneiro, a portuguese poet. Apparently it was the preferred method amongst artists back then.

They were lucky as barbiturates were prescribed as sleeping pills. In 2025 we must use shitty methods :-(
