I've had an open packet of SN since about October although I've kept it in a drawer so it's not directly exposed to much air. I was just wondering if anyone knows how long it'll take before it expires/becomes useless? I haven't exposed the majority of it to any fluids and I've semi-sealed it using clothes pegs so as to avoid it spilling everywhere but I just want to make sure that if/when I take it, it isn't all oxidised to NO3 and therefore worthless?

It needs to be properly sealed air tight otherwise moisture binds to it and reduces the potency.

How long does it take for this to happen? It hasn't been sealed air tight since October although there shouldn't have been much in the air, it's not so humid where I am

I'm not sure but because it's been exposed for months why risk it. I wouldn't. Mine is in air tight jars because I'm not risking it not working properly. SN is hygroscopic so it absorbs moisture from the air easily, there is lots of moisture in the air even if it isn't humid.

even in a dry drawer there is still some air exchange and ambient moisture
check for any color changes and see if its clumping up. if its a free flowing powder then its fine, otherwise there has been exposure to moisture

assuming there is low humidity, room temperature and the bag is open but contained in a drawer like you said, then upto about 40% of it may have already oxidized into nitrate

edit: a better percentage is actually probably 70% considering its been like that for 8 months
