Why do we love music? Can music have a therapeutic or helpful role? If so, how does it affect you?

That's a really tricky question. Sometimes I find some kind of music relaxing and calming, while the other day its taking me down my rabbit hole...

It's very interesting what you're saying. I also think so...
It can help us to feel better as well as to push our thoughts and feelings further into the void.
Even the same song can drastically change from one day to another I guess.

Basicly, yeah. When I was really down I always chose some energtic hip hop with stupid lirycs. Other than that, I can listen to almost everything. Ofcourse there are some really sad and depressing songs that we should avoid at all cost, lol.
Try this and tell me what you think:

That's interesting to know. I think each person has their own genre which work with them to calm, activate or anything else.

I liked it so much. Thx for the suggestion. I'm already listen to this again.

humans are fine tuned for pattern recognition and music is lots of little patterns. also i think art is just an inherent part of the human experience

Music is a form of escapism for me personally. I can be in a different world and appreciate the artists use of word play and flow (I listen to hip hop mainly) which is like a poetry to me

i havent been able to listen to any music since a traumatic experience and its the most bored, under stimulated, and uncreative i've ever felt. the only music i can listen to is weird shit that doesn't really sound like a song with notes at all.

From a logical standpoint I'd guess music plays into humans brains rewarding pattern recognition? Just a wild guess. It certainly relieves stress because it literally rewards the brain simply for listening.

For me personally music can affect my mood very heavily, and I use that to influence myself. It can make me completely draw a line from how I was doing and start over if I manage to really get into the song.

There's a theory that language began as music. That the earliest form of logic/abstract communication was poetry, and the original rhythm was the rhythm of collective work (rowing, sawing, weaving, etc.). It goes back at least to Darwin, the Russian revolutionary Bogdanov espoused it, and it's kinda the idea behind early communists' interest in reviving folk music (think Pete Seeger). When they unearth Scythian graves they find musical instruments buried with the dead. Hunter-gatherer societies with the most primitive languages have music. We like music because we are thinking, social animals. It's a piece of our evolution, just like big brains and nimble fingers.

I'll definitely look for some sources about that. It seems a valid theory and it's quite newsworthy.

I don't have many examples since I don't seek it out; don't know what I'd even look up. but gyroscope by boards of canada does fit the bill. let me know what you think lol. still can't listen to it very long because its repetitive.

besides that, natural ambience like rainymood.com or birdsongs, certain shows, or yt videos fill the silence most of the time. i also listen to these during car rides when i'm feeling nervous and they help to calm me down in a way music used to before the event i mentioned. it's not so bad but i do miss having a whole genre of media at my disposal

Despite being less common genres it's music in all respects though. I personally like to listen and experiment with multiple musical genres even having bad experiences with. The song u recommended made me feel a bit anxious and dissociated, but I like feeling "bad emotions" in music too.
Everyone has its own kind of music to calm down, activate or anything else. Yours is valid as much as the other ones.

sounds like a good chance to discover some new genres and artists. i'm not a scientist by any means but maybe discovering new music can help form new pathways in your brain. what songs/artists have you been listening to? i'd like to check them out if you're willing to share.

just curious, what are some of your favorite bands/artists/songs, op?

It'd be impossible to resume in a message so I'll chose just a song which truly hits my heart...

I love music. I suppose we like it because it 'speaks' to us emotionally. Or, it does me anyway. I can listen to something that resonates with how I'm already feeling. But, music can also change my mood to a certain extent. It's more effective at making me sad/ tearful than uplifting me but, it's still very powerful. Some pieces of music will pretty much always make me cry. Sometimes, just because they're so beautiful. It can be a relief to release very intense emotions.

It gives me energy too. I pretty much always have some sort of noise on in the background to try and coax me into action.

what songs / artists / genre ? I like NCS music, some pop songs, both newish and oldish (2009 Poker Face to 2025 Ordinary).

I also listen to music occasionally for daydreaming.
