Why?
Because people have been doing that since the beginning of days. It's an instinct.

If it's a good idea is another question.

They know how much suffering life offers, yet choose to do so anyway. They choose to have kids because of their own desires. The desire to have a child, to care for a small human and to be praised as a parent for doing even the bare minimum for their child. Many couples also think their toxic relationship will get fixed by having a baby.
There's also those that get pressured into having one, because having kids is "normal" and "everyone has them".

Because some people are so incredibly delusional, I mean they must be in order to see it as being an acceptable and justifiable thing to bring life here, I think that a lot of them are driven by extreme selfishness as well, if one was really a caring person then they wouldn't create unnecessary suffering by bringing life here.

I think that to procreate is such an incredibly cruel thing to do, nobody who is not yet existing deserves to be burdened with something so hellish and futile as having the ability to exist in this harmful world that is filled with risks and the potential to suffer so extremely. The non existent should just be left alone in peace, it's tragic how people continue to bring life here.

Because it is the only way to make the future worthwhile. And the passing of the centuries only confirms this trend, there are more and more people who enjoy being alive although there will still be people like us who will suffer and suffer, but there are fewer and fewer of us and that is good. It is only a matter of thinking of the common good and not of ourselves.

//

First off love your pfp, there's nothing wrong with having kids. It can help the parents maybe if they r struggling mentally and have a reason to live, they want the best for their kid. Let people do them and u do u, simple :)

Did you see the super Mario movie?
Having kids isn't like raising a fish. There are consequences. The kid eventually grows up and has to live in a failing world. That's wrong.

Cause they only think of the "positive" aspects of having children. And probably to feel better.

The answer is stupidity.

Pure. Stupidity.

At this stage of human evolution, only the stupid people are choosing look around and see that the world and human existence is nothing but suffering - and still choosing to have children.

And with contraceptives and pregnancy prevention education so readily available in this day and age...again....it's only the stupid people having children. If you "accidentally" get pregnant or impregnate someone, you are just plain stupid. An animal. No different than a wild dog.

Because there is a worthwhile future.

Thanks Custos - I was hesitant to even respond to this thread given the amount of vitriol. Based on some of the responses, one could assume we were living in the era of Skynet where humans are hunted across the world. Call me stupid, ignorant, and "evil" - but I'm pretty sure every one's life experience is not universal. I suffer from depression which makes my world view somewhat skewed. However, that does not take away from the fact that my wife and I made a decision later in life to have a child, and provide that child the best of what we could - in our particular case that meant private schools, world travel, and particpation in a sport that she loves and is actually nationally rated. We live in a nice house in a nice neighborhood and she is the most well-grounded kid I know.

She understands the world is not all roses and puppy dogs but she also realizes that life is good - it's a struggle but still good. So, because there are bad things happening in the world, does that mean we all throw up our hands and say "fuck it - I'm out"? Or do we remember what MLK suggested - "the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends towards justice" (as reiterated by B. Obama). Based on her education, and own moral compass, I see someone who treats all as equal - trans, gay or muslim, etc. and I am damn proud of her because she is more enlightended in social justice that I ever was or ever will be. She has stood up for her friends and for others she did not know - and the world is better - even if only slighly - because she is in it.

Of course I understand that my daughter's experience is not the prevalent experience of those on SaSu; but that does not mean the decision to bring her in to this world was not an act of love.

Because there is a worthwhile future.
and @Seneca65AD "Tempus tantum nostrum est"

Imo, that's pretty much subjective whether there is actually a worthwhile future for a child or not. This depends on many different known and unknown circumstances once a child is being "planned" or "unplanned" aka called "accident".

I never had the urge to procreate bc I've always been worried that a child I put into this world won't even have it as good as I had it. Not procreating was the best decision ever in my whole life.

At this point, I'm not sure. Years ago the world was much different, it's changed so much in the past 20 years. Now I would not want to bring a child here. We have stats on the growing jobs crisis and political parties on each side continue to move to harmful extremes. The world is insane.

I think it's a bit funny that just a decade ago they were telling us all that the world population was too big and we needed to stop having so many children. So people did just that. And now they're telling us that we need to have more children for society... :meh:
