What are the factors that play into it? Some people say you die an agonizing death with consciousness lasting minutes, and some people only pass out in a few seconds... What makes it so different?

Why can some people pass out so easily with partial whilst others just get exploding head syndrome.... position of noose and this can apparently differ for different people, type of ligature, size of ligature, depth of you carotid artery, your weight, gender... many factors.

I would have down this by now if I weren't so scared that I would mess up and be left there to suffocate for a while. I wish I knew what I were doing, and how to ensure the carotid artery is compressed... when done properly, apparently you're out in a few seconds....

About the type of ligature... I plan to use a scarf, made up of silk or polyester. What materials do you think are robust enough to not tear?
Also, I am asking about full suspension. I think the passing out times are quite different.

I'm no expert on ligature. Re partial and falling unconscious quickly with fill hanging... it's the same thing. You are cutting off the carotid arteries. All the factors that apply for partial apply for a quick unconscious full. As for ligature you need to hunt around for something strong enough for your weight. Some people say it should be thick. Others thin.... there is no overall consensus.

The main factor is the knot here. The hangman's noose for long drop hanging, if used for just suspension, will cause extended consciousness as it does not tighten well. This is the botched executions you might have heard about, with the prisoner slowly dying painfully. The knot was not designed for suspension but unfortunately you do hear of it being used inappropriately

A different knot, however, that tightens fully and quickly, results in much faster unconsciousness. If you're going for suspension, you want a slip knot or similar. I've seen a lot of hanging videos with such a knot and unconsciousness is most often within 15s, never much more, sometimes almost instantly.
