  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

In addition to our public response, we are currently seeking legal representation to ensure the best possible defense in this matter. If you are a lawyer or know of one who may be able to assist, please contact us at [email protected].

We have noticed a significant increase in volume of people wanting all or most of their posts deleted. I would like to make it clear that we do not mass delete a users posts or delete their account from the forum. Doing so would make a lot of threads unreadable. That being said, please be mindful of what you post here because it will stay on the forum unless the posts jeopardize a users anonymity.
Users can request to delete a maximum of 10 posts unless otherwise stated. Thank you.

Just don't overload with requests. we'll generally stick to around 10 posts though but we don't count.

I'll have to look at the rules again, but these rules surrounding deletions of posts/threads don't seem to be super clear. It should be very clearly noted when signing up that if you want to disable your account, it doesn't take your posts with you when you leave.

How do I request deletion? Looking to delete this post. It doesn't add anything & the situation has been resolved.

Thanks.

I'm curious what legal implications exists with this policy. Right to be Forgotten, Right to Data Erasure, and other consumer privacy legislations or regulations might be an issue here.

I think this site's existence in itself probably has some legal issues behind it and yet it remains, I don't think this will cause too much of an issue

No, but it might be an easy way to find another legal excuse to take it down.
"This site is incitation to commit suicide" is a statement that can be argued against, as it's a very grey area and it's difficult to prove objectively. "This site breaches GDPR " is a lot easier to prove, and this can give bad actors an infinitely easier way to find an excuse to take the site down or at least ban it in some areas, imho.

Maybe (just thought about this, feel free to point out issues pls) an easier way to do this would be to go the Reddit/AO3 way - allow users to "orphan" their posts/comments, so that their right to be deleted is arguably there but the conversations will remain readable.

No I agree it's a gray area for sure, but the section dedicated to teaching people how to ctb doesn't help the case, but it could be argued that those pages are purely for "education purposes" and that nobody is explicitly telling you to ctb there

Yes, exactly! There are many points that can be made to defend the site against the "you're causing suicides!" accusation. I've personally never seen anyone explicitly tell people to kill themselves - just people sending wishes of peace to people that have already decided/written to do so - and I've noticed a very nice trend of actually sharing help sources when someone changes their mind.

The gdpr thing, as far as I undeerstand it, is instead explicitly breached (but lawyers correct me if I'm wrong) and a lot easier to prove. It's obvious nobody here cares about it (me neither), but if a bad actor was to look for an excuse to bring the site down, or even just a way to annoy the site administrators, this looks like a very easy one.

If I were to delete my account, it just makes the account inaccessible and nothing else? It feels sort of redundant, especially if I just want to wipe anything related to myself before I ctb. It should've at least been more clear in the rules... Thanks for the clarification though.

Are you able to request a mod to change the email to a fake one and other private information on the account atleast? So nobody irl is able to connect the account once the ctb happens and the police gets involved; I'd rather not have anything read by people irl.
