6 months ago, whenever I thought about the state of the US government I always kept a "you're just crazy, he's not gonna get away with it, congress will have to step in at SOME point" mentality hidden in the back of my head. At this point it is gone and I am facing the reality of the situation with nothing left to fall back on.

The annual ICE budget is now $39 billion. For reference, the Canadian annual military spending is $42 billion and the Jewish IDF annual spending is $32 billion. They are funding this at the scale of entire countries' militaries. This is going to end up very, very bad.

Last time Donald Trump lost an election, the media ecosystem backed by him and those who funded his campaign led a group of people to storm the Capitol. During Trump 1 he had horrible and depraved people working in important positions in the executive branch, but those people at least took interest in the stability of our nation. Trump has no care in the world and he has now appointed a group of moronic, unqualified yes-men to work under him.

Full gas, no brakes. Donald Trump has no more voices of reason in his circle, they have been replaced with voices of chaos and extremism. The 2026 election is going to be very bad with $39 billion of annual ICE funding and a president who is being advised by zero reasonable people empowering to act on his very worst impulses. His advisors and staff are likely pushing for permission to do things that are more extreme than Trump himself would want if he was actually the one writing any of this fucking policy.

I have never wanted to kill myself more. I am an American born, mixed, second-generation immigrant. I'm well-assimilated, an American citizen and actually mostly estranged from my non white ethnicity, culture and religion. But all these people slurping down the racist social media rhetoric that immigrants are dangerous and ruining America will see my brown skin, curly hair and ethnic last name and have no discernment. They clap and cheer out of disinformed hope now while undocumented migrants are abused and dragged away, and they will clap and cheer all the same when they escalate further to violating American citizens that are in some form or another considered undesirable in their worldview. Trump himself warns "the day of reckoning and retribution is coming."

Besides the racial part, I am poor, bisexual, openly have beliefs that are being demonized by the administration as "dangerous woke ideology," and have documented mental illness. I am the ideal target, someone who is part of multiple categories of people that are used to blame the world's problems on by this Christian nationalist ideology.

I will die with dignity. I will die having lived a mostly dignified life. I will have no part in these violent and brutal times that we are now entering. I will not be living in fear and uncertainty and I will not sit here and continue living a life where my baseline state is one of terror. I have multiple fake percocets that I have tested and confirmed contain fentanyl. I'm afraid to go and I hate to leave my family grieving in my absence, but I'm terrified and trapped by economic circumstance. The country that we come out of 2026 with will be completely unrecognizable from the one we entered into it with in the worst way possible. I don't know when to take the pills, but every day I push it back I simultaneously watch the tsunami approach closer and closer. I would rather die peacefully than drown in it.

The Christian Taliban now runs the American government with a flamboyant and proud disrespect for the paradigms of the past that—while evil and harmful to Americans and the world as a whole—at least allowed for national stability. What a time to be alive.

You summed up my thoughts perfectly, but much more eloquently than I could have. I agree this country is lost, and as a trans woman I also have a target on my back.

Dying with dignity is the only thing left to do. It's only a matter of time until ICE prisons turn to extermination camps, and I would much rather die at home than in Auschwitz.

America is a hellscape. It's a fascist country and we've all been fed so much propaganda we believe it's the best country in the world. They call themselves the "land of the free" but that's not true at all. Even white, heterosexual, Christian men aren't fully free. But we all believe it because America controls most of the entertainment industry. It's pure propaganda.

They elected a pedophile as president, they won't release the Epstein files fully unredacted, they have a racist militia going around shooting and rounding up its own citizens, it sends millions to commit genocide and if you criticise it in any form they dismiss you as "woke".

I'm not saying America is the only corrupt country in the world but it is certainly the most corrupt, the most evil, and they've spent billions over the years on propaganda to convince the world they aren't.

OP I'm so sorry you have to live there and I really hope you're okay.

Democracy and capitalism is the best that humanity has managed to come up with after 1,000's of years… And it's depressingly rubbish.

It's a diseased and evil system. Human society has always just been stage managed greed and depravity. The truly kind and altruistic people, just get swallowed up and spat back out by the relentless meat grinder…

There is no utopia coming to save our species. No magic bullet political or social movement. It's all a foolish illusion to think otherwise.

Who are you talking about that wants to move there? I've never met anyone who would ever consider moving to the US. "Half the world" you listen to too much American propaganda. A Gallop World Poll found that only about 3-4% of adults around the world would consider moving to the US.

I agree and it's only getting worse. If you're not racist, misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic, or a genocide supporter people dismiss you as "woke". Don't even get me started on what people are doing wi the AI. The world is only getting worse with every passing day and I need to get out.

De qui parlez-vous qui veut déménager là-bas ? Je n'ai jamais rencontré personne qui envisagerait de s'installer aux États-Unis. « La moitié du monde » ? Vous écoutez trop la propagande américaine.
i am not an American citizen and I have traveled extensively around the world. Believe me, a large part of the globe would love to live in a country like the USA. You're probably privileged to be saying such nonsense. It doesn't matter, that's my point of view based on my travel experience. I will not argue further.

Okay fair enough. Completely ignore the evidence and the statistics and the polls. Completely ignore other people's experiences. I've travelled a lot too and have met many people who would never consider moving there for a variety of reasons. I am quite privileged. I come from a great country with a left-wing socialist president who is very critical of the US. I will say since you seem to like ignoring everything that doesn't fit your narrative maybe you'd fit in really well in the states? Just something to consider.

I hate the us but I do recognize that I have a higher standard. People from third world countries desire our food and clean water. It's not like they don't also have murder and deportation. We're just all fucked

There was always this undercurrent in the US. Nothing surprising. This whacko lot just brought it into the open. Historically, the US has never been entirely at peace with itself. Every 30-40 years it has to tear its innards out. How is today's right-wing churn any worse than the McCarthy years, the Great Depression, the Civil War or even the counter-culture and Vietnam years? The problem is the US has been electing a succession of poor governments - both branches. There is no shared sense of long-term nation-building that used to be there. Eisenhower, the celebrated WWII general, as president ,was skeptical of the MIC. Kennedy had a number of GOP-friendly policies. Somewhere, about Nixon's time, everything became about getting the next election done and no more. Civil disagreements across the two parties became civil wars and demonizing. If consistency goes, there goes the nation. Almost all of US' problems are self-inflicted. Why don't people care enough to rise up? The worst part is, no matter what NYSE and NASDAQ tells you, the US has been in decline for decades now. All the classic signs when a hegemon or empire declines - Rome, Ancient China, the Moguls, the Ottomans, the Mongols - expansionism, unevenness, unnoticed internal decay... they are all there. Take the Maduro incident. Looks as if the US showed how powerful it is. But shrewd observers figured out that if low-flying aircraft weren't knocked out in Caracas, there must have been some backroom deal and a betrayal in the ruling cabal. Worse, the US resorted to this kind of tactic, a violation of the UN charter only because it no longer has the money or capability to actually invade and subjugate a large country like Venezuela. Or the B2s bombing Iran. All those B2s are decades old. The US is not able to replace them quickly - no matter other countries don't have any such thing -OK, but how useful is that thing? Is having 6 fingers instead of 5 more useful in life? And the B2 damage is all made up by now. This is not power projection for actual results. This is just filling up the air waves. I am doubtful if in twenty years, there will even be a US of A.

It really doesn't matter if anyone wants to move here. Germany was also one of the most advanced, developed countries in the world, before they decided to create state sponsored industrialized death camps. They used their intelligence for straight up evil. Just because it's a nice country, doesn't mean it will not devolve into straight up fascism.

Even if it doesn't head towards 1930's germany, you know for a fact a significant percentage of the population would like it to head there.

Sometimes we have a good Public Relations push in the US... and, as others have stated, there are scenarios where you might have it bad in wherever you are located elsewhere in the world, and you might buy into the PR from the US... and you might get here and our flavor of oppression might still be better than what you dealt with in your country.

Example...

There are places in the world where a gay or transgender person might be killed on the spot. Here in the US, you are just made to feel like a flawed/lesser barely-person and pushed and insulted and oppressed for being out. Is that better? Maybe... technically... the Christians here surely sell it that way... you often hear, whenever LGBTQ+ people complain in the US about how if they don't like it here they should go somewhere in the world where people like them are killed instead of just beaten and oppressed. So, yeah... we suck here in the US... and we somehow spin it into a bragging point too!

Are there good things here? Sure. But you know... we act like no one else in the world is free... but, shhh... other places in the world have freedom too. Lots of places in the world have better quality of life and overall happiness than we do. Maybe they don't all have all the modern conveniences, some do though, but... the US doesn't have the market cornered on "freedom."

I've always said... democracy, communism, whatever you can think of... the problem is ultimately the people. Most of these forms of society work in small groups. When the population is lower and you don't deal with outside interests... in a small group you can make democracy, socialism, communism, capitalism, in all combinations work... like-minded people can do this and thrive at it. But... the more people you have, the more dissent you have, more ideas and more opportunity for corruption and greed to take over too. We haven't yet invented a social system to encapsulate the vast differences in people's wants/needs. It might not even be possible.

Your problem is that you look at America's past and wrongfully assume that it is America's future. The living standards of the American people are in active decline. The people who do live here from other countries like myself are being scared, ostracized and deported. Dragged in the streets, held in unsanitary and crowded deportation camps for months, arrested and deported without trial. My own immigrant family is terrified and keeps trying to convince me to move back to Africa with them, which is scary, because I have very, very little ties to the language religion or culture. Our roads are crumbling, things keep getting more expensive, and wages keep going down.

Many Americans certainly live a privileged life right now in 2026, but make no mistake, America will increasingly mirror the conditions in those countries where the people currently would want to move to the US. Our homeless population is already astronomical; you can go in the streets and see desperate people with needles in their arms passed out in our cities. Nobody wants to help them, they just criminalize being homeless and throw them in a for-profit prison to make them work for $0.03 an hour. I'm telling you, the institutions that made this a place where people wanted to live in the first place are falling apart.
