The spiral of death does not stop, suicide in prison in La Spezia: 44-year-old prisoner dies
«Spezzino, 44 years old, detained for resistance, violence and threats to a public official and awaiting first trial, had hanged himself in his cell on November 12th. Immediately rescued, he was taken to hospital near death. Yesterday afternoon his suffering ended. Thus, 83 inmates have taken their own lives since the beginning of the year, while 7 belong to the Penitentiary Police, in a spiral of death which, evidently, there is no concrete desire to stem." This was stated by Gennarino De Fazio, General Secretary of the Uilpa Penitentiary Police. «There are now 16 thousand prisoners in excess of the available places and more than 18 thousand units missing from the needs of the Penitentiary Police, which is also poorly organized and poorly equipped. This alone should induce the Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, and the entire Government to take tangible and immediate measures. Instead, we are witnessing the usual theatrics of politics and, at most, the reading of homework with misleading numbers during parliamentary questions, as most recently yesterday afternoon in Montecitorio - adds De Fazio - In 2022, a sadly record year, there were 84 suicides" .

The twin brothers committed suicide: - Unthinkable
Dad's story about the twins Elias and Benjamin who took their own lives is unimaginably heavy.
The beautiful Hamarøy cemetery, May 2019. A coffin with an urn on top, framed by a wreath of flowers. The two buried are called Elias and Benjamin. They are twin brothers. Elias died in November of the previous year. Benjamin in May. They were 23 years old.
This is how Lars Petter Kjær opens the story of his sons Elias and Benjamin. He and the boys' mother, Marit, had the most unimaginable experience. Losing children to suicide. They lost not just one, but two. Now Kjær has written the story of his two sons. Start at the beginning: when the boys were delivered by caesarean section in the old Rikshospitalet in Oslo. One was named Benjamin before he was even born. He wasn't getting enough nutrition and weighed only 1,500 grams. As a child he had to undergo several heart surgeries. His brother Elias was more robust.
- The unthinkable has become reality Four years have passed since Elias took his own life in November 2018.
In the time that followed, Elias' twin brother Benjamin fell into deep mourning. He didn't get out of it. He also took his own life six months later. - We thought the unthinkable had already happened here. It would be too terrible if it were to happen. But that's exactly what happened then, says Lars Petter Kjær. The whole family was in shock and Kjær felt what he describes as "a bottomless void".
