Help Sodium nitrite or nirate? SN

I don't know what the difference between nitrite and nirate are, could I get an explain please? I've looked it up but my search engine isn't being helpful.

from what I understand the sodium nitrate won't kill you but it will give you nasty bad symptoms while the sodium nitrite will kill you and it will give you relatively peaceful exist.
