My order just came in. The sodium nitrite came with a plastic bottle. Yellowish crystal salt. Not powdery. With two cap. One on outside and another clear thin cap on the inside. It is AR grade rated 99%. But one thing about is that when I opened the cap it have few medium size clump inside it. But the rest still in the salt crystal form. Dry to the touch. Is the SN still good? Or has it already oxidized?

Also I put some of the SN outside and after awhile they melted. Is that normal for SN? Also I heard that in order for SN to oxidize first it need to get wet. If its not wet then it shouldn't oxidize at all? I see this is quite a common questions since no one is sure what general consensus is since most of us aren't chemist. Please if anyone can help with these questions. Thank you. 9032

It reacts with air and turn it into nitrate. You can throw it away.

What about those that didn't clump are those oxidize as well? And how do we tell other than the clumping?

Okay as how I understand it the procedure A didnt cause any degradation in SN while procedure B only causes 25% Degradation?

So in conclusion it will took a long time for SN to degrade also when SN degrade it turn into liquid form? Is that right? Please correct me if I am wrong. Cause english aint my first language. Thank you.

I am not a native English speaker too.
My understanding based on the info linked is almost the same as you except "when SN degrade it turn into liquid form", which I am not sure about.

Where are you getting this information? It would be nice if you told @Vegrau your source rather than just telling them to toss the whole thing. Kinda lazy don't you think? I just got my SN a few days ago it came with a twist off cap and no seal underneath.. by the same logic the entire contents of the bottle should have converted to nitrAte when the thing was filled by the manufacturer. I'm hoping you're wrong because I baggied what I needed and tossed the rest...

This is a very common problems and no one seems to have a concrete answer to. This is why I made this thread to let people know what to look out for and what to do. We need more info regarding this matter.

Yeah since it said with procedure A the SN turns into liquid form but they found no degradation. These kind of thing is just so confusing. But still I thank you for the link.
