Help rope necessary to hang?

do i need rope to hang myself? what's the pros and cons of using something that isn't rope like a shoelace or bedsheets

It depends on if you want to do partial or full suspension. Shoelaces certainly won't work with full and I think they are too thin for partial so I wouldn't try that. Bedsheets cut in stripes may work, I guess

That is the main reason why hanging is a popular method. You can use almost any tool which can be wrapped around.
