Did the psychiatrist read you correctly or not? I feel like they're just guessing and have no idea what they're doing

No they did not. In the psychward I was in last summer you were pretty much guaranteed to get a bipolar diagnosis no matter your symptoms.

Here they don't do any diagnosis. When you try to talk to them about condition x or y they try to come up with reasons why you shouldn't have it and not having 1 symptom unfortunatly doesn't mean you don't have the condition but they invalidate your feelings and thought all the way through i feel like.

My psychiatrist at the psych ward was completely incompetent as well. They asked me what I've been diagnosed with and they didn't even know what one of them was (Dissociative Identity Disorder). They also withheld my meds the first three days and switched all the dosages around. It was honestly astounding as to how bad they fucked up. I'm sorry you had a similar experience :[

No way. They're just there to push medication of some kind on you. That's all they are really trained to do as well as making a snap diagnosis on the spot. One of the last times I was at one the doctor literally became frustrated on all the medication recommendations they were trying to give me. I've been on almost all of them at some point. Everything they would recommend I would tell them what my experience was which was usually paradoxical side effects. Example, if it was a anti-psychotic which is supposed to keep you calm like Seroquel it did the opposite and put me into a rage. For whatever reason medications do that to me. That or I get really bad side effects like rashes or even at one point one made me hear delusions and I am in no way a schizophrenic. They never understand that. They find me a difficult patient. What I want is basically the opposite of their bullshit profession, which is to get the fuck off this planet.

The psychiatrists use the "DSM" manual as their guide. You have to meet a certain number of "criteria" of a disorder before you are diagnosed with that disorder. Each disorder has a code number. That code number is used for insurance billing. That's basically how it works.
But the Dr must assess this criteria which can differ between Drs. Their opinions can differ depending on the Dr. 🤗🌹

I was in psych ward for 6 months. They tried pretty much all the antidepressants and all the antipsychotics on me and they never worked. They pushed me to accept that i am bipolar when I never had ups, only deep depression. Horrible experience. Plus they let me out of the psych ward after 6 months when I was in the most suicidal state. Bunch of lunatics...

Most of the times i've been- the psychiatrists have straight up said they can't read me. Even when I had the police show up after my third attempt, they also just said they couldn't get a read on me.

I was misdiagnosed for years. DID can be really hard to spot. Especially when half of them don't belive in it.

And yes they like to downplay the abuse people have received.

What do you call someone who graduates at the bottom of their med school class?

Doctor.

That's what most psychiatrists are. That's why it's so hard to find a good one. It doesn't matter if they misdiagnosed patients because there is no objective, gold-standard method of confirming most psychiatric diagnoses. There are also no repercussions to misdiagnosing someone in the psych ward, because everyone thinks psych patients are unreliable. If you try to challenge the diagnosis, it's not because the diagnosis is wrong--it's because you "lack insight."

Well they use the dsm ,but there is a lot of overlapping, and perception of the DR plays a large part. As I said in my case many dont even believe in DID. While statistics show there are more people with DID then Schizophrenia. Yet we can all spot somebody with Schizophrenia. You've never have spotted DID. You can see how they let DID down big time.

There is no objective way to psychologically evaluate someone.

If you end up in a psych ward you are most likely walking out with a bipolar/borderline personality disorder diagnosis regardless of what you were admitted for.

That being said, in my time in hospital I was accused of faking a crisis for attention. I found this incredibly distressing at the time because I felt completely disconnected from reality and could not rationalize what had happened to me.

I despise anyone involved in psychiatry. Believing you can objectively assess and then treat a perceived mental health condition is genuinely insane. If anyone deserves to be locked in a psych ward it is them.

Argh. Typing all this out makes me want to put my fist through drywall. Time to stare at the ceiling for eight hours.

Please pardon my outburst.

In *theory,* they use the DSM. I had a psychiatrist who didn't believe my established autism diagnosis because "real autistic patients don't care about forming emotional relationships with other humans." He didn't even ask about most of the diagnostic criteria listed in the DSM. (Also, if he had actually read the DSM, he would know that he was describing schizoid personality disorder, not autism.)

It still flabbergasts me that people can incorrectly diagnose bipolar disorder. Manic episodes are a hallmark of bipolar disorder and once you've seen a manic person, it's *obvious.*

I'm currently in a psych ward (voluntary admission) and I'm not too sure what exactly is supposed to happen. I've been put in my room. Every 15 minutes or so someone comes to check I'm okay (aka still alive), and that's about it. If there's no actual support within the week, I'll be voluntarily making a dash for the exit.

Also the mashed potatoes made me even more suicidal than I have ever been before they were horrific

I had a psychiatrist that was extremely insistent I had bipolar 1 because I described myself as having "ups and downs". All humans have ups and downs.

Some days I want to do something active like go out and play ddr, but most days I keep to myself and do not leave my room except when necessary because interacting with others in person causes me significant distress.

To me this does not sound like the mania/hypomania cycle associated with bipolar 1, but to this psychiatrist it was bipolar 1 clear as day.

Apologies for the walls of text. I am very opinionated when it comes to psychiatry

No, everything was blamed on my depression. Only when i was finally out and back to my therapist, I got my autism diagnosis.

I also have a huge issue with plucking my eyelashes out, however my psych ward therapist said it is not visible so that was simply thrown to the side and never talked about.

Not at all, I have been to 6 different psych wards a total of 12 times or smth. Each time I was diagnosed with completely different stuff. The only times these were identical is the two times I was discharged and taken back within 48 hours, usually there are some that stay the same. For example, depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Except there is always a few that they seem to put on my files that I either haven't been diagnosed with before, or stuff that I was NOT diagnosed with the last time.

This could be because the first few psych wards were in Missouri and the rest were in western Washington; very different but still way too similar experiences. All of the random, more "severe" diagnoses were only in Washington. In Missouri, I was diagnosed with stuff that felt random, but not excessively. I'm not sure if it's the different political views or demographics of the people being admitted, maybe both.

This is my first time saying anything on SaSu, sorry if it was messy lmao
