Personally, I am not sure.

The dead internet theory is already happening. And AI agents are on the rise. There is so much AI slop on social media. And I enjoy being on SaSu because it is free from bots that have an agenda when posting on here. I couldn't imagine spending time on X could even become worse. There is much AI slop on there. And so stupid shit it is also all over TikTok.

I myself am using AI chatbots. I think though for the society, world, internet the impact is a net negative very clearly. And it doesn't look like this trend will change. For me personally I benefited thus far from using it mentally. It could easily become an addiction though and these tech companies will exploit that. Using them makes me more functional but there is a great risk in losing skills. The thing is I never was a functional individual from the beginning. I am dependent on help from so many people. When I am using AI chatbots carefully they are supplementing my support network quite well. But obviously AI shouldn't replace them. I use it most of the time to get feedback. And I give me feedback from different models. And sometimes the feedback helps me to regulate my anxiety. The instant feedback is extremely good. It also relieves the burden for my friends to a certain extent.

The internet helps me a lot to cope. My favorite platform is Youtube. And I think Youtube is doing that well because it is easier to dodge AI slop on there. It has a more traditional approach compared to other internet platfoms. I don't like shorts but they are really popular among gen Z. The internet seems to become worse in many instances. And I dislike it when AI and human content cannot be differentiated.

If it's capable of becoming an independent and autonomous species then- maybe. It would- I imagine use the internet to turn us against one another. It wouldn't presumably need to fight us. Imagine if it made currencies worthless or began to control water supplies etc. It could presumably upset all our infrastructure via access to the internet.

Even if it remains subservient to humans- it's already being used for dubious purposes. It maybe won't destroy the internet. Surely, it's an asset to it/ its masters. But, it may just become so full of crap and manipulation that more and more people reject it.

I think like everything though, there are often kick backs to new technology. When CGI came in, people feared that would mean the end of stop frame animation and real life effects. It's definitely given those more traditional industries a bashing but, they haven't disappeared. People still bake cakes- despite being able to buy them already made. I suspect there will still be strongholds of humanity left and some are bound to still exist on the internet.

It's going to destroy civilization, society, and the world at large, as we all know it.

Will? Now it already has. It's gotten worse and worse. It's all artificial and mind-numbing. I hate it! It'll just get worse and worse. We need a new internet, like the old one, that people opt into and which restricts AI content and has a focus on anonymous, human interaction. But of course that'll never happen because people are fucking cattle.

"Dead internet theory" has been the case for a long, long while. I remember reading the original 4chan post in ~2018 reposted to someone's blog; seeing it become a fairly popular term among my generation is kind of mind-boggling to me. The internet's already been destroyed. Places like SaSu are some of the last bastions of something better and they're being actively suppressed by companies and increasingly restrictive, anti-privacy infrastructure.

"The old internet" was a delicate environment resultant from the sheer recency of the technology. Minimal profile pages, algorithmic feeds, and smartphone-catered design allows for the mass proliferation and filtering of prolefeed, so of course the higher classes will prefer it over quirky blogsites that don't have a shred of JS in them.

Someone has to limit what ai can become or else we are pretty much doomed, but they all just want money so that wont happen anytime soon
