Need advice on charcoal burning

How should the charcoal be lit? Does it matter whether or not I use the chimney starter method or just lighter fluid. I heard that using lighter fluid can sometime give an uneven burn on the coals. Is this true?

Chimney starter and paper/cartoon is preferred. I read somewhere not to use lighter fluid.

Chimney starter is probably the best.
