Many different living beings have self-awareness, but they still appear content to simply be according to their nature and distressed when in environments that stifle it. This was the basis of the Cynics' philosophy, that we're to live in accordance with our own own. Although, they didn't believe that to include participating in what we can call civilization and things we need to prosper as human beings was already given by the universe as natural phenomena. For me, Ted Kaczynski made a lot of sense; this is certainly an unpleasant situation we find ourselves in, but I don't believe it's a moral thing to harm or end the lives of other living beings.

Ted makes some sense, but his hatred consumed him. He was letter bombing people, a few of which had no idea why they would be targeted. And many innocent people where caught in the shrapnel. He's almost the definition of how the ends don't justify the means.
