  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

Natural death can mean many things, but I assume you are referring to death by old age within one's sleep. Then yes, I'd assume generally that would be painless, but it's unlikely to be much different than properly done hypoxia, a gsw to the head, or even some medically induced deaths.

As for why I'm alive and at least trying to maintain some level of functioning, I worry about what happens to my mom if one day she wakes up and I'm not around. Suicide is more a luxury I can dream about, rather than something I can actively pursue atm.

That said, a natural death would be nice. There's something peaceful about not having to try lol.

I envy people who die peacefully in their sleep.

Dying from "old age" might be somewhat peaceful, however most deaths that are not suicides, at least in my thoughts, are not peaceful.

I have seen folks die from Covid, liver failure, kidney failure, pneumonia, all types of cancer and a host of other ailments and they generally are wacked out on so darn many pain killers and the like that they are breathing but are never coherent. So, I do not consider that a peaceful death ever.

I am in compete agreement with @DivineSpark, that just moving on after I would retire for the evening and not waking up in this world but the next is the way I wish to move on.

Going to be for real you don't choose which natural death you could experience. If you die peacefully in your sleep sure that's probably best case scenario and I've had family do so. And I hope it truly was painless. But sometimes it doesn't work out that way. I watched my grandpa pass in pain with nothing helping him. The sounds I heard were not peaceful, the way he looked is haunting. I wish all natural deaths could be pain free but you don't know if yours will be.
As far as myself? I'm not doing it no matter how badly I wish to die or harm myself because of my girlfriend. I don't want to be the reason she's in pain. It's unfair to her if I bring that type of pain upon her life.

I mean if you go into a coma or sleep and die then yeah pretty painless. I mean I'm pretty sure my friends death was pretty painless since she was basically sleeping/in a coma. Although, she was probably in pain before that because she was ill. But a death that one goes to in sleep is basically painless.

But, other naturally caused death aren't painless, like liver failure, or maybe aneurysms or strokes. So eh. Although, it would be nice to go by a natural cause. I think one would notice the pain less.

I'm really resonating with this.
Suicide is a luxury.
Anyone can pass by life and die when they're old but not everyone can commit suicide. It takes a lot of mental willpower to end it all. Along with that, some of us have responsibilities that we just cant die and leave behind.

Nobody wants to suffer, but it's impossible not to be cognizant of the suffering one's disappearance can inflict. You are very right about both responsibilities and also the immense willpower it takes to commit suicide. I personally like to think that we all have our different thresholds, and so when the time eventually comes and the suffering has simple been there too long or has gone too far, then we will have the power to ctb, responsibilities and loyalties be damned.

Hospice worker here!

Dying in your sleep of a seizure, heart attack, or something acute tends to be painless. Dying from a prolonged illness? No freaking way. That's what fentanyl and morphine are for. You're on IV morphine round the clock at the end.

If I don't ctb, based on my family history, my passing will likely either be a heart attack, dementia, or cancer. None of which are especially pleasant passings.

The painlessness or lack thereof isn't too much of a factor for me one way or the other. Were I set on catching that bus, I could deal with the pain if the method were surefire enough; it'd be over soon, right?

What keeps me off that bus is that I have people around me who would be very much upset by my passing. Most of all, my child. Even when she's a self-sufficient adult, though, dying by my own hand would be traumatic for her if we have any sort of relationship in adulthood (and I certainly hope we do!). If I die of old age, at least she can prepare herself when the time comes. A 40 year old dying is out of left field. A 90 year old dying is what it is.

Natural death is painful. Losing your senses in the process is frightening and uncomfortable.

Seeing people is hospice makes me think that it is not painless. Depends on how you define natural death.

100% agree. I have seen folks in hospice with iv pain killers and wishing to go home.

Give me a shot and overload my system, as I DO NOT want to be a vegetable in a bed pumped full of meds till, I quit breathing.
