Maybe you feel the things that you hate in others as a chasm between those people and you, and try to build a bridge between you and them by treating them like you'd like to be treated, in hope that some of those things end up changing. I'm kind of in the same situation, in the crossroads between Empathy Avenue, Burnout Street and Frustration AlleyI think people pleasing is a kind of defense mechanism- in the hopes they will treat you kindly or at least, not treat you unkindly. So, in a way- maybe it fits. If you have a distrust of people, maybe you do it in the hopes it will protect you.
Or, maybe you were just brought up with nice manners. Even if you hate the person you're being kind to.
