How to dispose of expired or compromised SN?

I have a 500g bag of compromised SN (I opened it to test and think the humidity got to it).

How do I dispose of it safely? I have a new unopened one for when I need it, but don't want to hang onto the unusable stuff till then.

I don't see this question asked before, and it seems complicated on google?

Absolutely fucking don't. SN is toxic to aquatic life, and given you're even asking this question, something tells me you care about avoiding being a jerk.

Chemicals are, well...chemicals. Usually there re very specific ways of "disposing" of them (but of course we all know how totally absent our environments are of deliberate contamination, ha) which are not very "consumer"-friendly. Note guidelines from PubChem:

500g of SN probably won't do much when dilluted in millions and millios of liters of water, mixed with a lot of bacteria and god knows what else running through the sewerage system.

The police who did my (IC SN) welfare check and who (thankfully) left me with it- said I could take it in to them if I changed my mind. I'm not sure if that's wise- if you're not on their radar though. But then, it's more suggestive of someone trying to prevent their own suicide I suppose so, maybe it would be ok. They may start asking questions where you bought it though perhaps- if they are running investigations on it.

I've seen people say they just chucked it away or, poured it down the sink- which I also find disturbing- like other members. Seeing as how I'm sure it's very toxic.

Maybe irresponsibly, I'm willing to leave it (if I choose not to use it,) plus other things (we all no doubt have a bunch of stuff that needs proper disposal- paint thinners, dead batteries, broken electrical goods) for a house clearance company to dispose of. I'll make a note that a bunch of stuff needs disposing of responsibly.

I imagine the police may take it as part of the investigation too- if it's at the scene of suicide. I'll just put up warnings to wear gloves and dispose of stuff carefully.

Pretty disgusting but, I've wondered what they do with any vomit etc. I guess it goes into biological waste to be incinerated.

I don't know if there are such places where I live, ig no. But this would be the best way how to get rid of toxic chemicals in a safe way. There's only the other method to make nitrate out of it in chemical reactions with other chemicals, this is how nitrites can be turned into nitrates.

Thats the best option honestly. When one person a year ago convinced me to dispose of SN i went to garbage collection facility for citizens and told them that i got this bottle of SN. and i got a bit of questioning, mainly if i use it for curating meat for financial gain and i told them i planned to use it for private reasons and they tried to question a bit but respected my decision to not share it. Then i signed few papers with my info on them. (which may be problematic for some i guess? but ofc it differs from place to place) and just went along the way.

Since then i got the second bottle btw.

Okay, turning it into nitrate may be the better option.

This is the way how to safely dispose nitrite:

Potassium nitrite (or Sodium nitrite) can be oxidized to potassium nitrate with NaOCl solution at pH approx. 3-4. Reduction with amidosulfonic acid at pH=3 is also possible. This produces potassium hydrogen sulfate and nitrogen.

KNO2 + NaOCl --> KNO3 + NaCl
KNO2 + H2NSO3H --> KHSO4 + N2 + H2O

Do you think it is safe to pour bleach into a bucket and add SN? I'll have to do this in my bathroom. This was also mentioned in the thread:

Another option is to react it with a bunch of bleach (in an open area with safety equipment since I assume you can't use a fume hood). To oxidize to nitrate which is less toxic/harmful. I understand this in theory but would not be personally comfortable doing this in my backyard and it seems like the reaction could take a while and outside is not a good place to leave reactions unattended.

Assume you have 100% "bleach" (=sodium hypochlorit). I doubt that bleach you can buy in the supermarket is 100% sodium hypochlorit). Bleach also contains other chemicals.

You'd do it slowly not all at once.

A little math:

for 69g SN (1 mol) you need 75g NaOCl (1mol). Now you can calculate the amount you need for 500g. If your bleach has only 5% NaOCl you need a lot of bleach.
