Honestly, if you do it properly, and by that I mean shooting the right spot at the right angle, etc, unless you're using a .22lr, neither the type nor the caliber should matter. Seems like you could be looking for a shotgun though.

10-15* angle upward from parallel with a handgun in mouth, no less than 9mm, and ensure it's straight and not angled to the side. Anything bigger works too. Bigger bullets = more likely to hit target of brain stem / medulla which is instant death or close to it if you don't hit perfectly. I recommend reading through the guns megathread, it's not as active now (I've been waiting for a response for days) but I went through all 40+ pages when studying for my upcoming CTB.
For shotguns, think I heard 12gague with 00 buckshots for most damage. No birdshot
Ensure you always get hollow point if bullets allow as they spread out (mushrooming) for more internal damage instead of wasting their energy on exiting the body. Best of luck.
